Cheese, cheese and cheese but also beautiful buildings. We were not up in the museum, but the store is nice and there are taste samples and many other stores on the market also with taste samples. Very delicious and more fun than both The Hague and Rotterdam.

We wanted to visit a cheese market, and headed out to Gouda. They have everything all set up in the square with buyers and sellers who demonstrate the bargain8ng using hand signals, even bringing over samples cut from a wheel to taste. Also, young ladies in traditional dress handing out samples. Once deals settl, d the cheese is tossed into the horse drawn wagon. Even had a colorfully dressed MC to kick off the festivities. It was not a huge crowd, so nice. The market was also 9n for shopping

We travelled to Gouda by train from Delft. A quick and easy journey, then a short well signposted walk from the station to the market place. The market and bartering was set up for tourists but it was certainly worth a visit. The local market was also on so we bought cheese, candles and mini pancakes. All excellent. Give the seafood stall a miss. We bought what looked like an excellent crab starter to take back to our caravan for our evening meal but it was SWEET and horrible. We had a Gouda cheese toastie in the square for lunch. I think it was called the Grand Cafe, it was on the corner. We then wandered round the pretty streets and visited the amazing church with the magnificent stained glass windows.

An interesting place with many vehicles selling cheese, as well as fruits, vegetables and other things. The cheese event, with its transporters and pieces of cheese, only takes place on Thursdays, according to locals. As we went on a Saturday, we could only enjoy the stalls and the frenetic movement of tourists and, of course, taste lots of delicious cheeses.

We were not far from Gouda and had heard a lot over the years about it being a nice place and also about the cheese market. So we decided to visit whilst it was on, we were at the first one this year.
It was not a disappointment at all, a lot going on and the kids loved seeing the horses and tasting the cheese. Plenty stalls to eat from. Gouda was also a very beautiful place, we will 100% come back to this again when we next visit the area.

Really enjoyed the Thursday market. A recreation of the old cheese market complete with auctions and horse and buggy hauling away the cheese. There are lots of stroopwaffle shops not just the famous one off the square.

We came to Gouda on Cheese Market Day. It was wonderful with all the vendors selling cheese, dairy products and more. We also climbed to the roof-top of the Grove Church in town for part to the 750th anniversary celebration of the town. Cheese Day is lots of fun, music, photos with local cheese vendors. and more

very much worth a visit even if it's just for how good the town square smells during the cheese market. we didn't buy or taste any cheese but still had a good time here, the rest of the town was not very busy because everybody was at the cheese market

Gouda is an incredible adventure in a small friendly town and the namegiver to the famous Dutch cheese. Gouda is a city and municipality in the west of the Netherlands, between Rotterdam and Utrecht, in the province of South Holland. Gouda is a small town but its history is interesting.
On the main square near old City Hall you can visit the Cheese Market on Thursdays, from April onto the end of August. The traditional market dates back from 1395. You can buy tasty cheese and watch wonderful folkloristic performances.
There is a modern and free toilet in the central square. Also in the city there are Dutch-style urinals a bit similar to Amsterdam ones.
You can go outside the city and visit the Reeuwijkse Plassen, or the Goudse Hout, lakes in and around Gouda for a good picnic outside the town. Lakes are in an hour walking away from the centre of the town or even less. A city also famous for its Gouda cheese, stroopwafels (dutch waffles) and candles many grachten (urban shipping canals), historical drawbridges, decorated clay pipes, and its 15th-century city hall. Its array of historic churches and other buildings makes it a very popular tourist destination.
A visit to the city can easily be combined with a visit to the site of Kinderdijk, a collection of historical windmills that still function and are recognized by the UNESCO World Heritage. Visiting this area is a true unique experience, since this part of the Netherlands is a few meters below sea-level and is for 700 years protected by dikes and water management by pumps and windmills.

Open the website welcometogouda . com, then go to "Cheese" and then to "Gouda Cheese Market". There you find the dates. I could not link the website, Tripadvisor forbids it.

The Gouda Cheese Market starts from the first Thursday morning in April untill the last Thursday morning in August. There is no Cheese Market in Gouda on Ascension Day.

I make note of a previous note posted, and accordingly, the "Market" is open 3 x a week to be sure. The Cheese Auction has become more of a tourist experience than what it used to be. However, the museum and the cheese experience and "Purchase" is and will always be open. Hope this was useful.

How do we get there using public transportation from Hoofddorp i.e. which train ,what changes, how long a trip, how much time(1/2 day or entire day) and are trains crowded on Thursday during the summer? THANKS
