A journey through many peoples and cultures on our earth. That's the best way to describe the museum. The amount of exhibits is enormous. A museum to wander around and be surprised.

Fabulous museum. Modern displays of culture with an unflinching repentance for Dutch colonialism. Great assortment of artifacts presented in context. Came away with a better understanding of how world cultures are both distinct and interrelated.

Beautiful museum and definitely worth taking your time to explore.
The entrance was difficult to find because one of the signs for the museum was wrong.

A really interesting and attractively and excitingly designed, diverse collection of both "old" and contemporary objects.
My 7-year-old daughter was given a large Dutch-language flyer in which you could play artifact bingo and learn a lot about these selected objects (the objects are easy for children who do not speak German to find, and the explanations are simple). This way she did not get bored so quickly.
We saw about half of the exhibition in about an hour and a half. The themed areas seemed small to me, and the "suite de visite" is not clear, so you have to be a little careful not to miss anything. But the objects and what you can learn about them are really great. The touch screens at each exhibition row gave information about each individual object in English and Dutch.
There were large and small video installations everywhere (from screens to walls beamed with local scenes, with appropriate soundtracks in the background, for example a Greenlandic village where the audio wind whistles around your nose or Indian singing where you can marvel at a procession of festively decorated North American natives in full costume) with impressions or information.
We have the museum ticket, otherwise the visit would have been relatively expensive (€16 + €8, and after an hour and a half my daughter seemed quite full). We'll be looking at the other half soon, before the museum ticket expires. And I might go back again in peace.

It's great with earplugs or loud music in earphones. What a beautiful exhibition and good explanation of the pieces.
Also a lot of video and that was also the problem for me. That sound was so loud that it made it difficult to read other things. Through the rooms with video with rock music loud and enjoyed the few rooms without video.

It was difficult to find at first because you have to walk around. The temporary exhibition was not for me. I thought the permanent one was very nice with different areas. I'm into artifacts and there were some very nice ones. Australian Aboriginal art is always beautiful. After an hour and a half I had seen everything.

Ofschoon we al veel van de wereld hebben bereisd levert een bezoek aan het volkenkundig museum toch nog veel aanvullende inzichten op. Veel boeiende informatie over culturen uit alle delen van de wereld maken het bezoek tot een boeiende leerzame belevenis. Aanrader.

Met kleinzoon van 5 ongelooflijk genoten van de dierenacademie bij museum Volkenkunde.

Not a bad museum, has various sections, 1 per continent roughly. Museum is on 2 floors.
Although it is a very respected museum in the NL, i feel the musuem should increase their artifacts

I have checked their website numerous times, but nothing is advised on closing or refurbishment/works. You may need to get in touch with them directly.
