Enjoyed the Roman & Egyptian artefacts. As an English speaker, I needed a talky device, which I don't really like that much, but it gave enough info to understand the main displays.
There is a lot to see, and after a few hours I stopped taking in information! This didn't dampen my interest, and I wandered around marvelling at the condition of each item, their age and splendour.

City very close to Amsterdam and which also has several channels. There are many restaurants and very easy to do tuda a pe. Super recommend staying close to the train station and do not fail to take a tour of the canals and visit the street fair that happens every Saturday.

Perhaps my most favorite museum in the Netherlands. The Egyptian collection is amazing. Through the audio tour you get a lot of extra information. There is also much more to see about the Greeks, Romans and archaeology in the Netherlands. The temporary exhibition about Paestum is highly recommended. Especially if you listen to the podcast about this exhibition before or after (for example via Spotify).

Great museum. Has Dutch history as well as collections of Egyptian, Greek, and Roman artifacts collected over the years. In the lobby is an Egyptian temple (built by Romans), which Egypt donated as thanks for help relocating items

Excellent collection of antiquities, most with a Dutch connection. Modern, well-presented displays in Dutch and English. Easily spend 2 hours here.

Been to RMO many times, the last time often for the beautiful exhibitions. Both exhibitions also connect nicely for those interested in Roman history. Parking is possible on the Haagweg site within walking distance of the museum. With a ROMEO card where you support the museum you can enter for free.

Since I was in Paestum years ago, I was very curious about what the RMO would bring with "Paestum, city of goddesses". The exhibition takes the visitor along the line of foundation - growth - flourishing - decline - fall, which spans about 1000 years, first under the rule of Greeks, then Lucanians (a mountain people from central Italy) and finally Romans. A chronological design has been chosen, with the emphasis on the period under Greek and Lucanian rule: the objects shown from that period cover more than 80% of the three rooms. The exhibition owes its subtitle "city of goddesses" to the worship of Hera, Athena and Aphrodite in the recovered temples and shrines, images of which can be seen in the exhibition. In the exhibition you also walk through a painted tomb of a Lucanian soldier who returns home with loot. It is fantastic what curator Ruurd Halbertsma has managed to bring together in this exhibition. The podcast recorded by him and some colleagues proved to be of great value to my visit to the exhibition because of the context and depth it provided. It is a must-see for anyone interested in important cities in antiquity.

Beautiful exhibition about the year 1000 in Leiden. Nicely set up and interesting. Texts in Dutch and English. There is also a beautiful exhibition of excavated items at the former Roman fort Vechten.

Nothing short of superb. The museum has an amazing collection of Greek and Roman artifacts, and the section on Roman items found in what is now the Netherlands is fascinating and informative. Our visit started with the temple from Egypt sitting in the lobby(yes, that's right) which comes with its own light and sound show.
If you are in Leiden, definitely go. And if you're visiting Amsterdam, it's just a short train ride away. This is a thoughtful and accessible museum; a real gem.

Ik heb interesse om dit museum eens te gaan bezoeken maar lees/zie ook dat ze mummies hebben. Daar ben ik zelf geen fan van. Kan je gedurende het bezoek dat gedeelte van het museum makkelijk omzeilen? Ik sla dat deel liever over.

Echte mummies (d.w.z. in doeken gewikkelde lichamen) hebben ze niet. Wel de versierde sarcofagen waarin de lichamen gelegen hebben.
In de grote hal en meteen achter de audiogids uitgifte staan twee enorme stenen sarcofagen. Daar kijk je moeilijk overheen. Verder in een zaal op begane grond een collectie houten sarcofagen, die zaal kun je prima omzeilen.

Thanks for your answer. We did visit a number of fabulous museums when we were in Amsterdam and Leiden this past year, not to speak of The Concertgebouw where we were able to appreciate the terrific acoustics.
