The great lady of Nivelles yes it is Gertrude, on a heavy Sunday afternoon is hot. We all dream of this freshness that can be found in the cellars, when I speak of cellars it is more like catacombs. Yes the catacombs of Nivelles are below the collegiate church and will give chills to some. And yes because it is there that you will find the sacred ossuary of the city, at the turn of a small door in the church you will enter the catacombs and discover some tombs of the ancient Levellois. An afternoon rich in culture, unexpected and secret and do not forget to visit the cloister and its collection of bells with sometimes confusing inscriptions...

We wandered in and participated in an amazing guided tour with Walter. The visit takes you to the excavations under the church, the crypt, the museum, the tower, the cloister…The rich history told with an occasional amusing story. 1,5 hour flew by.

Collégiale majestueuse où nous avons pu visiter les catacombes .
Dommage qu'elle soit en restauration et que nous n'avons pas pu apercevoir Jean de Nivelles ...on y reviendra !

This church has been destroyed during the second word war ans totally rebuilt during 50 years resecting the original design.
Nivelles is a place to visit - nice food (tarte al d'jote) , belgian beers etc.

We enjoyed a visit to the church while staying in Nivelles. We arrived right as a wedding was ending, so we enjoyed watching the bride and groom exit from a distance before walking around the outside and then entering the church. It is very old and quite impressive; apparently it has been mostly rebuilt after damage during the world wars, but it still looks old and was redone in the original style. There was no fee for entering, and we spent about 20 minutes enjoying the views of the inside. It's not as impressive as some cathedrals we've seen, but still worth the stop and the enjoyable location in the heart of Nivelles.

Kerk was open maar verder was er zeer weinig informatie beschikbaar , geen folder voor rondleiding, spijtig. Ook de toeristische dienst was gesloten, vrijdagnamiddag ?????

This massive church is no doubt the main sight to visit in the town of Nivelles...there was nobody when we were here on a rainy afternoon in may...no entry fee
