Ik nam de tour met gids Willie. Een bekwaam & (on)ervaring kerkhof gidser.
Na een rondleiding rond het koor van de kerk, en daarna het spotten van een tweede koor ontdekten we de wonderen van dit gebied. Hoewel de gids af & toe met open mond naar mijn aanvullingen moest luisteren wist ze heel goed stand te houden. Zo wist ik bijvoorbeeld al dat een bepaald schrijn in de zomer een licht hartje vormt op een muur. Ze liet zich niet door het lood slaan en vervolgde haar weg naar de catacomben. Daar maakte ik kennis met de meest weerzinwekkende sensatie:
Post-mortum sludge
Het waren niet zozeer de plassen op de grond die weerzinwekkend waren, maar wel de bijna lugubere passie waarmee Willie mij educeerde. In haar ogen zag je de sludge bijna fysiek ontbinden. Een moment vreesde ik voor mij leven. Ook begon ze plots over de chemische reactie die Dreft op een aangekoekte pan heeft; dit stelde me gerust. Ze bleek toch gewoon maar een nerd te zijn.
Als afsluiting aten we een spaghetti in een brasserie vlakbij. We hadden eigenlijk carbonara besteld maar bolognaise was ook goed. Daarna kreeg Willie maagkrampen & begon zakken snoep te vreten: een voorschrift van een centrale nachtshopvendor. Dat leek mij geen goed idee maar wie ben ik om een gids tegen te gidsen.
5 sterren voor de sludge in Laken & voor de gids!

It was already long on our to do list and not dissapointed us. It's an cemetry with above graves but below there are many corridors with graves. A really must are.

I had the opportunity to visit this church at a very special time: one of the few days during the year when the Royal Crypt is open for visiting. Our Lady of Laeken holds the tombs of every Belgian king and queen who have reigned in the country since it became independent in 1830. In truth, this only comes up to five monarchs buried there (two are still living) but the crypt was still very interesting.
King Leopold I, the founder of the dynasty, has a large tomb in the middle of the space, while the other kings and their spouses share single sarcophaguses near the walls (or in the case of Leopold III, three people share a single sarcophagus since he is buried with both his wives). I was struck by how pomp-less and unpretentious the crypt looked, not at all what you would expect from a place where kings are buried. There was, in fact, something quite homely about it, especially the fact that tombs had small frames over them containing black-and-white photos of the king or queen buried within it, just as you would find in many Catholic cemeteries in Europe.
The rest of the church, built in the 19th century, is pretty both on the inside and the outside, though there is not a great deal else to see. Getting there is straightforward. You can either walk for 10 minutes from the Bockstael Metro station, or walk down from Laeken Park. I recommend the first option as it's quicker.
Coming to see the church when the Royal Crypt is open is a bit more of a challenge. Generally, the yearly opening days are posted on the website of the Belgian monarchy, but sometimes they disappear from there as well, and when they are up they don't tell you at which times on the selected days the crypt is open (I first arrived in the morning only to find out the church was only going to be open in the afternoon). The church does not have an updated website so the exact days and times are only posted on the church's own doors! On top of that, when I visited a notice inside seemed to give additional 'secret' days when the church was open on Saturdays. It all feels like visiting some secret Shangri La, but do not be discouraged. Do your research and you will not be disappointed when you visit. It really is a unique opportunity to see how Belgian kings and queens prefer to be buried as normal human beings.

King Leopold I built this church in memory of his wife, Queen Louise-Marie. She is buries in the crypt along with other members of the Belgian royal family. The adjacent cemetery is known as the Belgian Pere Lachaise.

elegante chiesa neogotica , costruita come mausoleo per la regina Luisa . si trova poco lontano dal palazzo reale . nella cripta sono sepolti tutti i componenti della famiglia reale belga .

Estábamos de camino al Atomium, cuando repentinamente se nos apareció esta hermosa iglesia blanca, que parecía ser el final de la avenida....desgraciadamente no nos dió el tiempo para volver y visitarla en su interior, pero ya lo tengo anotado como un lugar a visitar en mi próximo viaje a Bruselas.

Endroit magnifique déjà visité entre amis, mais à ce jour renseignez-vous avant d'y aller car la crypte n'est plus ouverte chaque dimanche de 14 à 17h00. C'est la police fédérale qui gère les heures d'ouvertures..........

Monumentaal kerkhof en bijhorende crypte aan iedereen aan te bevelen.
Hierbij kan je de illusie van het nabestaan onder ogen komen geldverspilling destijds terwijl men om kwam van de honger.

Dit is een prachtig kerkhof. Met veel monumentale graven en ook nog een Denker van Rodin op het graf van kunstverzamelaar Jef Dillen. Ook de kerk is een juweel, maar helaas is deze steeds gesloten als ik er ben.
