Spotting the bell tower of Saint Elisabeth’s from Grand Place we went to take a closer look at the church. Its style is mixed, because most of the original gothic church, including the bell tower, was destroyed by fire in 1714 and rebuilt in Baroque style. The all-white interior is quite impressive and the church is a heavenly quiet place but it doesn’t have any memorable features. So, if you are only spending a short time in Mons, I would skip Saint Elisabeth’s.

There are some polychrome Gothic revival altars and a few stained-glass windows. One of the altars carries a statue of a black Madonna. Maybe a version of Our Lady of Hal? We noticed that the columns of the nave were full of holes and wondered how that could have happened. The ceiling of one of the chapels also shows sign of humidity damage. Some maintenance seems overdue.

church in the centre of Mons

A large church in the centre of Mons, but not as impressive or large as the St Waltrudis church. Can also use a lick of paint, and not too many details to see. From the outside especially the tower is special.

Riche église gothico-baroque !

Dès l'entrée, on est saisi par l'ampleur et la majesté des lieux ! Surprenant mariage entre les structures gothiques de l'ancienne église et les aménagements de celles du 18e siècle. Bel ensemble de boiseries, tableaux, statues...

Επισκεφθήκαμε την Μονς επιστρέφοντας απο Παρίσι για Σαρλερουά. Είχαμε χρόνο στη διάθεσή μας και είπαμε να κάνουμε μια παράκαμψη να δουμε την πόλη Μονς. Πανέμορφη, μια μια μεγάλη πλατεία με καφέ, πολύ περιποιημένη, και φυσικά την πανέμορφη εκκλησία Eglise Sainte Elisabeth.

Relics of St George - Maybe

The Eglise Sainte-Elisabeth de Mons is a church not far from the Grand Place of Mons. The church is a mixture of Gothic, Romanesque and Baroque as you’d expect from a church that’s been standing since the early 16th century and no doubt undergone restoration. Especially as the church was gutted by a fire in the 1715 and inside, you can see where the original Gothic structures withstood the fire and what had to be rebuilt, which is the majority. Not much of the original building has been restored and there’s only a few stained glass windows, the rest are plain glass. The church reputedly has a reliquary holding the relics of Saint George, which is housed in one of the chapels.

Unless you’re extremely pious with a need to see relics and reliquaries of saints, I’d only visit the church if you have time to spare. There’s also a statue of Leopold II outside the south west corner of the church.

Une église de village en ville.

A quelques pas de la grand Place, face à un "mikado " de planches faisant banderole sur la rue où elle se trouve, l'église Sainte-Elisabeth invite le passant à s'y intéresser car sa position un peu en retrait fait songer à une personne réservée sinon timide. Sa façade est bien jolie, un rien mystérieuse de par son décor. Elle rayonne de calme face à l'agitation de la place du centre ville. A l'intérieur, l'architecture nous rappelle ses souffrances d'incendie de son histoire. Les nombreuses chapelles sont gracieuses, sans surcharge, précieuses même de par ce qu'elles offrent à la découverte (ainsi peut-on voir le reliquaire dit"Saint-Georges' protecteur de la ville,quelque peu plus loin la vierge noir-noircie-de Halle... ) C'est le calme de l'endroit qui vous imprègne qui est le plus ressenti. Elle rayonne de sérénité, comme sa sainte patronne. Eglise de ville, quasi église de village, petite soeur de la collégiale locale, quasi adossée à l'animation proche à la fois de la circulation, du palais de justice sis en face et du centre ville. Un lieu de méditation, de réflexion, de relaxation, de calme pour tous, de prière(s) si croyant, mais de toute manière un endroit pur pour tous.

Erg grote kerk

In het voorbijgaan zijn we deze van buiten mooie kerk vanbinnen gaan bekijken.
Ook binnen is het zeer de moeite waard om een kijkje te nemen. Een mooi pijpenorgel en oude graven completeren de kerk. Ook stond er een gouden koets die bij processies wordt ingezet. Kijk zeker even naar de foto’s om een goed beeld te krijgen.
