This place is a must visit when in Ghent! The Belfry of Ghent is the tallest Belfry in Belgium! And you certainly know it once at the top! I’ve climbed many a spiral staircase, or viewed a city from various heights and indoors or outdoors, this one definitely tests your nerves, but in a good way. You get the lift up for some of the way and different rooms tell you all about the fascinating history of the Belfry and it’s bells. You’ll walk up (and down) some tight staircases, but if you’ve visited a Belfry or tall medieval building before then nothing you won’t be used to. The view once outside felt slightly unique to anything I’d done before, the viewing platform is very thin, but again exciting rather than terrifying. It’s a great way to view the whole city and beyond. I highly recommend a visit.

Great view once up, there is a sense of visit, and a very convenient elevator. I advise to go when the chime rings and to linger to look and discover the machine, its operation is simply beautiful. There is also on the first floor, the GUlden Draak and all the history of the belfry and its bells not to be missed. The ticket office is located under the belfry, under the stairs.

Visit the belfry with the history of its construction through the centuries. The climb can be done on foot or by elevator. Different rooms along the floors tell the story of the belfry to this day. Arriving at the top of the belfry, the 360 view is superb and gives beautiful views of the city. We go through the chime room and just in front of the mechanism we see in motion when it chimes.

One of the most splendid old buildings in town. It's the big bell tower or belfry that one can see from all directions. It does tower over the older part of town and can best be seen from the big open square in front.

I went up the tower with my girlfriend because we were looking for a nice view of Ghent - which we got! The top has some of the best views over the inner city that we could find, and if you have the time definitely do visit.
However, two main drawbacks of our experiencf - you cannot take the elevator down, only up, and the stairs were quite small. If you make sure to eatch your step it should not be an issue though. What bothered me a bit was that the corridors on the top of the towers were quite narrow, they could barely fit 2 people next to each other at the same time.
If you do not mind that, this will be a very memorable view and provide some nice pictures as well.

The wonderful Belfry in Ghent belongs - along with numerous other Belfry in northern France & especially. Belgium - a UNESCO World Heritage Site ... and quite rightly so. - The 90-metre-high & slim bell tower is a striking symbol of profane/secular/urban power (...and especially the guilds) vs. Clergy & Nobility in Ghent. - The magnificent tower can be climbed by pedestal via stairs ... or "climbed" via elevator ... and enjoy a magnificent all-round view over the entire city from high-altitude observation terraces. - On very special festive days, the golden dragon from the top of the tower actually breathes mighty fire ... a truly absolutely magnificent spectacle, which can be seen widely at night ! - It is absolutely worth climbing/visiting the tower - however - and it is also absolutely worth reading the time-honoured building history of this magnificent bell tower in renowned sources. - The Belfry is one of the world-famous so-called. "3 Towers of Ghent" and is actually unmissable.

Well worth the 44 steps to the lift/elevator. Time your visit with the bells, and get ready to take video. The chimes are fantastic!

You can go up the tower for €11. You have to take the elevator there, return you can take the stairs or elevator (due to oncoming traffic). However, people also go up via the stairs, not safe, too narrow. The aisle on the tower is very narrow; you can't pass each other... Get off on the 2nd floor in front of the dragon!

Unmissable belfry with a breathtaking view at the top accessible by elevator. Be careful with children otherwise take the elevator from end to end.
There is a treasure hunt to find the dragon's egg 🐉 nice for children, they even have a gift at the end.
Paid access at €10/adult and free for children.

Does any bell move or is just a hammer touching the surface of the bells?

Hi, unfortunately the self tour did not allow anyone to see the bells at the top of the Belfry during the bell ringing...you can only see the huge drum that activates the bells to a certain arrangement/tune.
