This is one of the largest open squares in the city center and it is so big that it accommodates a large market with all sorts of things for sale. We sat on a terrace here enjoying cold drinks. Lots of cafes about.

Turn and turn around Ghent you will also arrive in this square...characteristic , lively, but all in all a little quieter than other parts of the city.

As the name "Vrijdagsmarkt" probably does not suggest, here every Saturday (!) lively weekly market hustle takes place; on the (...beautifully integrated into the historic city ambience...) huge market square, in particular (peasant) food, clothing, artistic articles, toys ... and much more are offered for sale; at least at one of the various food stalls there are also the "Escargots" (cooked snails in celery broth) offered by me "hot" ...hmmmh ! - In the middle of the square stands an extremely impressive monument to the former (de facto) Regent of Flanders : Jacob van Artevelde ... and shows the Flemish in an "arm pose" to England, which is quite rightly & absolutely forbidden in Germany today ... but the colossal still image of Artevelde was already created by Hendrik Conscience in 1863 ... and at that time such poses (with the arm extended high) were (still) very popular internationally. - The Vrijdagsmarkt of Ghent should absolutely - and preferably on a Saturday morning (market day) - be extensively visited - and also culinary enjoyed !

Most of the public political and social life took place on this square in recent centuries. Here princes were solemnly received, festivals were celebrated and feuds were settled. In addition to the statue of Jacob van Artevelde, the 15th century Toreken can be seen. Many buildings date from the 18th century and the Ons Huis and Bond Moyson from the early 20th century. There are also numerous restaurants (we had a delicious meal twice at t'Vrijdagsfeeling). We thought the square looked more pleasant in the evening with the lighting. During the day it is extremely busy with cars from the 2 parking garages. There is still a market here every Friday morning and Saturday afternoon. Also take a look at the beginning of Baudelostraat where there is a row of beautiful facades.

A distinctive square surrounded by a traditional town hall and art nouveau facades. It has hosted a weekly market since 1199. Benches are spread around the place for seating, and there are restaurants and cafes overlooking the square.

It no longer has the appearance of a central square, but continues to have, especially on the north side, an airy perspective like no "Friday market" square in Ghent. Add to this the buildings, original or reconstructed, in perfect Flemish style that surround it, and the panorama of the Gandave "three towers" that stand out on its horizon coming from one of the streets that emerge from it. At night, everything becomes infinitely more beautiful, and the atmosphere becomes magical, among the places that best benefit from Ghent's fantastic night lighting. In particular, note the narrow street to the north surrounded by unusually similar buildings, a succession of antique shops.

On some days you will find a market on this big square with all sorts of things for sale. Otherwise it is just open and surrounded by cafes and restaurants. We came here for drinks a few times, nice places with terraces for outdoor seating. Just a few steps away from the major tourist areas.

This large square represents Ghent as a city of the common people, and several days a week, it hosts a market. We arrived in Ghent on Saturday and knew that there would be a market in this square in the afternoon. I got some cute casual pants and eyeglasses. Usually the biggest market is in Sunday morning. But besides the market business, the square is big and beautiful with the statue of Jacob van Artevelde in the center. Also this is a great place to eat, drink and watched people.

You could spend hours here just chilling on benches, reading, absorbing people, sights and sounds. There are plenty of restaurants lining entire plaza, most open for lunch only.

cuando estuve en gante habia leido que esta plaza era de las mas animadas y como un centro neuralgico para quienes viven en la ciudad. pues cuando fui estaba desierta. sin demasiada gente ni actividad. mas que el monumento central no parece tan interesante porque tampoco la rodean cosas que destaquen.
