A movie plays every half hour, which is fine to start with. Then you walk around the museum and you can look at various attributes from that time. Pretty impressive but don't expect too much of it.
We had a great time. Then have a Kima drink it the terrace overlooking the Pico!

Museum very well maintained and characteristic. You visit in a short time, but it is worth it. You can also see a very well done documentary about whales. Nearly absolutely derisory. Very friendly staff.

The museum is very interesting, with a very recent and original aesthetic. It is worth seeing the documentary about 20 minutes (it has sessions in several languages) to get to know the hard life of whale hunters in this area of the Azores. The exposed artifacts are very interesting and everything is very well explained. I got richer out of this experience!

There are 2 whalers museum on the island (or more?) and I highly recommend visit both - they are very complimentary and considering how inexpensive they are, and the fact that you most likely rent a car it's a no brainer.
This one here is devoted more to the art of boat building, the whaling as a profession, and the art of scrimshaw - where they both overlap a bit in the 2nd part, the scrimshaw display here is superior and it definitely shows, very impressive display!
TIP: Lajesis a very nice and pleasant place to roam around, so make sure that you do walk around and explore the area, not just aim to visit this place as you would be missing out a lot

Beautiful and informative museum. Small-scale and very suitable for a visit with children. We were shown a very old film about sperm whale fishing and it certainly made an impression.

A great stop to learn about the history of the whaling industry of Pico. Fantastic B&W film from the 70’s tells the tale. A beautifully executed Maritime museum complete with a library, and changing exhibits

A small but very organized museum. Standard entry costs just €2. The museum allows you to learn about the history of the whalers of Pico Island.

A superb museum dedicated to sperm whales and the men who hunted them. Beautiful photos and numerous objects explaining this now disappeared industry which for several decades made Pico the mecca of sperm whale hunting.

Very interesting. The best is the movie they show as an introduction. It shows the harshness of life on the island and whaling in particular. At the same time, it shows the harshness of the sperm whale hunt.

Hello, I was very impressed with the film about whalers, which we watched in the museum. But unfortunately could not find in in the Internet. Who was the film director and is it possible to find it?

We just visite this museum and watch à very interesting nice old film. I dont know if it is the same you watched at. Staff did not know the name. After a long research on internet, i think i have found. Des hommes et la baleine (somerhing like that) from Ruspoli and comment by Chris Marker . Begining if a very nice tandem. I did’t Found it in vod. But you can dvd on Amazon
