Spectacular view, we love it.
First we went to the old boilers, also spectacular.
After we waited for the bus we paid 5 euros per person for the bus to go to 2 miradouros and to the miradouro of the fire lagoon we loved the bus visit took about 30 minutes or a little more.

We drove from Ponta Delgada as far as the parking lot, by the Casa da Água trailhead. The road is blocked off there and a police officer directed us to the parking lot. Then we waited for the bus for about 30-40 minutes, which cost 5 euros. There is room for approximately 40 to sit and 36 to stand, so the bus accommodated a lot of people. It made 2 stops at different viewpoints, for approximately 5-10 minutes, enough time to snap a few photos. Some people stayed at the second viewpoint and hiked down to Lagoa do Fogo. We did not but apparently you can catch any bus back to the parking lot, but I don’t know when they stop for the day.

Very worth to come see this. First, you'll eventually be stopped by police at a near parking spot. They have this set up to reduce the amount of traffic. You'll be asked to park and take the bus. 5 Euros per person which includes the back and forth trip (cash only). Views up the mountain are magnificant and worth it. The bus will stop 5 minutes at the first stop and 10 minutes at the other stop, then turn around.

You can't drive up by car anymore. Instead, you have to pay 5€ per person to get up with a shuttle bus. The bus is the last. Super poorly organized. They say he comes every half hour. We had to wait at the parking lot for over an hour for him to come! Then you are chased through the lookouts to take a quick photo. If you don't want to wait over an hour for the next bus, you have to get back on board quickly.
1 star for the beautiful view. Overall, however, you can rather save the trip.

Traveling around the world i never came across a worse organisation then this.
We waited over one hour for the bus, then everyone who came after us were first in the bus.
On top the driver said to wait for 10 minutes but left after 7!? Our bag was still in the bus and the driver only stopped because i was screaming at the door!
they need to improve the whole service!!
I tried to sent this complain through their website many times but even that did not work.
Very bad experience!!!
Reading the other comments here i see why they changed but it is a nightmare!

This is another of the islands truly stunning volcano lakes which is best visited when the clouds are not shrouding the top of the hills, and this they do often. Although the ‘lake of fire’ got its name from the 1563 eruption the name sticks because it is frequently shrouded in low lying cloud, giving the impression of an erupting volcano.
It is accessed via the EN5-2A which will take you past the Miradouro do Pico da Barrosa and Miradouro Lagoa do Fogo, the two best points to stop to get a stunning vista of this lake. There are several tracks down to and around the lake, which we did not do, but our guide mentioned that the descents get quite narrow near the bottom and should be attempted by competent hikers with the correct footwear. The tracks are fine once you are at lake side.
We were on a guided tour so could drive directly to the various view points for this glorious lake, but there are restrictions at certain times of the year ( I believe June to September) for anyone without a guiding permit, and this was definitely the case in August when we visited, when other tourists in hire cars are not permitted to use the road after 9.00am and you have to park in the car parks at the bottom on each side and take either the red or blue shuttle busses to the lake viewpoint’s ( charge of 5euros). I can certainly relate to the negative reviews from last year about this shuttle service. Glad to hear that the previous reviewer had no problems but when we parked in the main Caldeira Veira car park to visit the Monumento Natural da Caldeira Veira, it didn’t look like the situation has improved and it was clearly obvious the half hour bus service from here is woefully insufficient for the amount of people that want to visit the lake and from the length of queue I saw a wait of 90 minutes would be most likely for some.

The view of the lake from Miradouro da lagoa do fogo is dreamy, the trek that starts downhill (100 meters in altitude in 500 meters away) suggestive, beautiful walk on the banks but at some point unfortunately you can smell a strong smell of dead birds, in fact on the beaches there are carcasses and pieces of bones everywhere, perhaps an illness has decimated all the birds of the place. Mixed feelings then.

A beautiful lake, on the road there are several viewpoints with amazing views, but to consider several things:
In summer, from 09-19h you can only access by bus
You have to check the visibility through webcams they have to ensure a good view
We went in our own rental car and could see it in the different viewpoints and it is one of the most beautiful views of the whole island. Essential!!!

The views are INCREDIBLE. Jaw dropping. At first we were worried about the shuttle bus you need to take to get up to the best views but those worries are no longer valid. The bus runs every half hour ( we did get lucky with our arrival time in the parking lot)...but still...no 70 minute wait as some of the reviews from 2023 said. The bus is 5 euros pp and makes 3 very nice stops

We drove it yesterday. Easy drive and well marked parking spots along the way. If weather is good you should be able to see it all. Even if it is a little cloudy. But don't let the weather stop you. We noticed it can change very quickly on the island. One minute we were in the clouds at the top, the next it had blown away leaving us a beautiful view.

I don't believe there is public transport to the mountain. We rented a vehicle and drove to the top(rim) and then hiked down. I did notice several couples coming from the bottom and hiking up as we were going down. There are tour buses that go up but I didn't actually see any during the time we were there.

Hi - would this be a suitable day out for a family including one with limited mobility? Are the stairs/ walkways steep, how uneven is the ground for walking on and is the paths a decent width?

There is a paved road going to the top of the hill overlooking the lake, but I really would not see it as a hiking area. You would want to take a vehicle to the top. Once there, you will find plenty of easy places to walk near the road. However, the "money" view overlooking the crater requires a short walk on a narrow, uneven, and rocky path. I would not recommend that for someone with limited mobility.
At the level of the lake, there is a scenic overlook area. There is a narrow path down to the beach. I did not take it, but it looked reasonably smooth and not overly steep for those with good mobility in relatively decent shape. However, it is a long path, it does go downhill, and it is not wide, so I would not recommend it for someone with limited mobility.
Mostly, you can get the best views from either a vehicle window or by stepping onto the pavement at the scenic overlooks. This lake is one of the most beautiful parts of the island, if not the most beautiful, and should not be missed.
