This is the Trip Advisor listing for the Funas Lake, not the geothermal park with its fumaroles, which have their own Trip Advisor listing (see Caldeira das Furnas). The lake is another of the stunning bodies of water filling a former volcano crater on the island. There is a hiking trail around the lake which is 9.5km in length and will take around three hours to do in total. If you want a total panoramic view of the lake, then the Miradouro do Pico do Ferro a short drive away is the place to go. You can just about see the rail of the viewing point on the hill above from the edge of the lake. But if the cloud is down and you can’t see the viewpoint then don’t bother.
The best time of year to visit the Furnas Lake is between May and September, when the climate is mild, and the rains are less frequent.

As title suggests, this was one on our list. It also had other attractions (Grena, Caldeiras, boats etc) as well. Loop is about 5-5.5 miles. We completed it clockwise from the Varela (red) bus stop on 27 July. To make a day of it, plan to complete this walk first before going downhill (red and yellow posts) into Furnas, the other Caldeiras, Terra Nostra or Poco Dona Beija.
Per other posts, both hot pools were closed on 27 July. This meant that we visited the other Caldeiras after lunch and retraced our steps uphill to the lakeside past the Poco Dona Beija. Once at the top, we completed the remainder of the clockwise circuit back (20-25 minutes) in time for the 1710 Varela bus (1620 - Mon-Fri) back to Ponta Delgada.
Worth doing without a tour - return fare (both companies) was about 25 euro for 2 adults and 1 child. Journey time was 90 minutes - with outbound buses at 0715 (blue) and 0900 (red).

Contrary to what we had read, it takes a good two hours to go around the lake, whose perimeter is more than 6km (admittedly, we stopped several times to admire the landscape, the plants, look at the mineralized springs, the tree park, etc.). We were able to park in a parking lot that was free (was it only that day?). Around the lake is easy to do, but the part by the road is less pleasant.

Nice lake and interesting hot spring mud-pools.
Parking / entrance fee costs 3 euro per person and the lady at the booth promised no other paments. Also, no prices were anounced at the booth where we had to pay (see the picture). She said no other payments will be necessary to visit the park behind the springs. HOWEVER, the park above is charched separately and costs 10 euro per person. Apparently, the lie is a very useful one, as she told this to people in other cars as well.
This was a nasty speck in otherwise great experience in Sao Miguel and Furnas.

Nice big lake in the crater. Just before the entrance of park Grená you can rent kayaks or pedalos (15€/hour). Swimming didn't seem to be the intention...

The fumaroles (fumarolas) are a must-see! The powerful demonstration of nature's strenght is breathtaking. It is free and there is a pretty picnic area there. However, the walk around the lake is not worth it. It's just a very regular walk. There is so much more impressive things to see in Furnas, go see them instead!

We stopped near this lake after an extreme road - fog, zero visibility. This place also had bad weather - it was raining. Perhaps that’s why we didn’t take in the beauty of the lake. Furnas itself with Terra Nostra Park is much more interesting. But we walked past an abandoned church to the beginning of the forest. There is a paid park with camellias and peacocks, entrance is 4 euros. We didn't go, it didn't seem very well maintained. Don't waste your time if you are planning to visit the park in Furnas, it is amazing and you can spend the whole day there.

The lagoon is beautiful. Watch the removal of the pans from the boilers, it's super cool, the smell of sulfur is noticeable but it's worth it👍
