Interesting modern building - very striking exterior. However I afraid I did not know the artists work before I visited and I wish I had researched. I found her work to be very unpleasant and I cannot I unsee some of the images. We completed the museum in about 15 minutes. It is small inside. Then we sat sat for a while in the café waiting for service that did not come despite it being very quiet with few people. So in summary if you are a fan visit - if you are just visiting the area and are curious- do your research first.

The building was really beautiful and the works by Paula Rego on display were brilliant. When I visited, her 1970s work were on display.( they interchange them)
As this museum is dedicated to her work, fans of her work and surrealism will totally enjoy it.
Worth a visit.

Currently closed!! Be careful if visiting in October/early November the exhibitions are closed while they change over. No information on their website shows this or on google. Their cafe and gift shop are open but nothing else.
I wish they’d have updated the website we took a whole day trip just for this. There are for some reason loads of chickens in the park it sits in so you can enjoy them if the same happens to you.
I suggest to call them first.

The building in which the artwork is housed is both interesting and beautiful. Inside, the space is airy, fresh and well lit and is a nice place to spend some time. Having seen some of Paula Rego's quite astonishing large pastel paintings in an Edinburgh exhibition recently, it was a voyage of discovery for us to view her mostly smaller works in different mediums in Cascais. The art on display at the time of our visit covered a period of about fifty years of the artist's life. Whether or not one "likes" her work, it is certainly engaging and makes one think. It is not pretty, but it is important and has meaning and relevance - and surely that is what art is about. The entrance fee is cheap and includes an introductory leaflet well worth reading.

Great exhibition in a wonderful space. This is a small gallery and an hour or two is plenty of time to see Paula Rego's work and how this changed over the years - particularly when she moved to London. I believe most of her drawings went to the museum. They helpfully provide a short guide in English and all information alongside the pictures is also provided in English. Lovely cafe in the grounds too.

O Bairro dos Museus em Cascais é uma delícia. Fui no Centro Municipal de Fotografia e na Casa das histórias Paula Rego. Esta Casa é um lugar especial. A começar pela arquitetura, que impressiona pela originalidade e pela amplidão. Em seguida, vale dar uma pesquisada na biografia da Paula Rego e entender o porquê de uma museu dedicado a ela leva o nome "Casa das Histórias"(faz todo sentido com a obra da artista). A cada seis meses a curadoria muda a exposição em cartaz, o que é ótimo porque deixa a A casa viva e , me parece, há sempre um outro(a) artista convidado(a). Eu vi Paula rego e Menez, que foi uma grata surpresa. Enfim, super recomendo!

O que mais me chamou a atenção de imediato na paisagem pelas duas estruturas piramidais de igual dimensão e pelo betão pigmentado a vermelho. O projeto, correspondendo sem duvida alguma à vontade da artista, todas as escolhas foram feitas pelo arquiteto do projeto com vista a satisfazer as funcionalidades museológicas e o bem estar de quem o visita como quem nele trabalho.
Os diferentes formas que compõem o edifício configuram quatro alas, subdivididas no interior em salas sequenciais, dispostas em torno de um volume central mais elevado, que corresponde à sala de exposições temporárias.
O interior, em tons neutros, pavimentado a mármore azulino de Cascais, conta, para além das áreas técnicas e de serviço, com 750 m2 de áreas de exposição, uma loja, uma cafetaria com esplanada aberta para um frondoso jardim e um auditório com 200 lugares.
O terreno e as árvores preexistentes são também elementos fundamentais do espaço.
Os diferentes formas que compõem o edifício configuram quatro alas, subdivididas no interior em salas sequenciais, dispostas em torno de um volume central mais elevado, que corresponde à sala de exposições temporárias.

Impressive building but not a great fan of the main artist Paula Rego.. much is quite disturbing. Not a gentle holiday visit!

One Paula Rego work, a textile, otherwise, her work isn’t there until 04/11/21! So we are from the UK on a break in Portugal & travelled a round trip of 3 hrs & had planned our day around the visit. We saw a small exhibition of Brit notable artists’ (mostly minor) work! No mention of there being no Paula Rego work atm on website. Staff were grumpy, Such a shame, please keep your website updated!

El edificio es muy hermoso. El rojo del hormigón contrasta muy bien con con el verde del cesped y los árboles.
El interés por la colección dependerá del gusto de cada uno.
A destacar el restaurante en el que comimos (cuenta con una zona interior y una terraza). No tiene una gran carta pero todos los platos son deliciosos (probamos unos cuantos). El servicio muy atento y la relación calidad-precio fantástica. Creo que cuando corra la voz va a ser un sitio donde será difícil encontrar mesa.
Desde luego si estáis por Cascais deberíais probarlo.
Descubrí mi postre favorito desde ahora: la pizza de sandía!!!
