The facade of the church is not particularly impressive, but the empty Town Square in front of the church helps draw attention to it. The first thing one notices upon entry to the church are the azulejos tiles that completely cover both sides of the church. The altar is quite nice too.

Uma igrejinha pequena mas ricamente adornada, com talha dourada, azulejos azuis e pintura no teto. E bem preservada como tudo em Óbidos. Vale a pena conhecer.

Magnificent architecture, beautiful statuary and paintings, and gorgeous blue-and-white tiled walls. One of the prettiest churches we saw on our trip.

Likewise many other Churches on the Iberian peninsula, this one was also built over the Mosque when the Moors were defeated in 12c and rebuilt later in middle ages.
Santa Maria occupies the main village square and can be seen from the Castle ramparts, so you cannot miss it. Beautiful Azulejos tile work inside along with a terrific altar and painted ceiling.

The exterior doesn't look that grand but when you go inside the walls are extensively tiled in the traditional blue and white tiles of Portugal.

Esta igreja localiza-se na Calçada dos Clérigos, na principal praça da Vila. A igreja é pequena, mas com um grande significado. Só vi por fora, pois estava fechada.

We did stop and take photos as this old church is posed to great advantage in an open town square. Sadly it was not open so we could not go inside to see the reported lovely tile work.
