It is nice, but very steep. The palm trees are gorgeous. There is not much to see, the whole experience is still worth it because of the views over the city and the terrace approach, which is unique for a botanical garden. If you cant walk well or have any difficulties walking uphill, you should not visit this place.

We visited here in November during our weeksstay on Maderia , excellent visit and beautifully laid out, well worth a visit

Not as much actually in bloom as we expected, but the setting is superb, and is quite literally breathtaking on the path back up this very steep garden. The Jardim was planted down the steep slopes of a valley, with terraces upon which were planted with a kaleidoscope of bedding plants. It is a charming place, and happliy, does not have the infrastructure features, or even the crowds that Monte Gardens has.

It was even better than I expected, having been told it was "a must do" in Madeira. I preferred it to both Palheiro and Monte Palace Gardens, both of which we visited too.
Took loads of photos as there was so much see.

No vale la pena .Descuidado , falta de información yo no perdería la tarde con la de cosas para ver que hay en Madeira .
Además el precio que tiene es excesivo para lo que es .

The gardens are amazing. To be so high up with varying levels takes some doing by the team of gardeners. Some spectacular plants and trees to talk about and photograph. Plus the views across Funchal are tremendous. Recommended!

Gardens are well tended with lots of interesting plants, many in flower in November. But steer clear of the cafe. Thought I would have a refreshing mango juice drink but it turned out to be very watery and they charged 4.50 euro but worse yet the cashier tried to charge me for two drinks at this price. Luckily I spotted this on the receipt and demanded 4.50 euro back which I got. I think this was an attempted scam, rather than an accidental mistake.

Interesting cable car ride across the ravine to get to the gardens. The gardens would have been better earlier in the year but still plenty to see. But as these were official botanical gardens I might have expected the gardens to have been better tended and to have had more information about what was on display. Having paid extra for a map of the gardens, I would also have expected it would contain a bit more information than on the basic map boards dotted around the gardens. Given that gardens are such a feature of Madeira, it was a bit disappointing that the gardens didn't provide a bit more of good visitor experience. Having said that there was still plenty to enjoy and they are worth a visit.

A good place to spend some time reviewing flora and fauna with some unusual and native plants. A good location for one of the cable cars and a good tea room. Like most places in maderia it is walking up and down with some flat sections.

Hello,
I’ve read on another persons answer, that you need to be careful no to mix up the botanical gardens and the tropical gardens.
Are these in the same place or completely different locations?

Yes, there are two different places. Tropical gardens are straight on top of cable car, botanical gardens are on the right (short walk for second cabine)

I’m not sure.. I think they are open all year long. There is no winter in Madeira :)

Can something be done about the few exotic birds left in appalling conditions?
Through the barred fence, we saw two huge parrots in a very small cage, making a dreadful noise trying to fly around, they were obviously very distressed. We also spotted a couple of white cockatoos in a cage.
We visited about seven years ago and saw parrots of all kinds in extremely small cages.
On our way out we asked what happened to the exotic birds. We were told that two years ago they stopped the public visiting them as there were too many complaints about ill treatment. Her comment was that we were told we were treating them as if they were in jail!
I would welcome any comments.......

Yes. We got a taxi back to town, offered us the same price as the bus. There were many taxis waiting just outside the Gardens.

Not cheap @ €31.50 each excluding admission to the Tropical Gardens which is about an additional €12 but the cable car must have cost a fortune to build and maintenance costs must be high. The gardens are very attractive.
