Very nice synagogue that was restored despite looting around World War II and an earthquake in 1995.
Admission costs 4€/person , only in cash according to the gentleman at the entrance
A mikve - ritual bath - is also present.
Many emotions when visiting this pretty little synagogue
Thank you.

There are practically no Jews left in Crete, but a synagogue in Chania has been preserved. Always there. The synagogue is small, definitely worth a visit. A beautiful old mikvah!
The director of the museum is a non-Jewish German. She has expressed an irritating opinion that the anti-Semitic anti-Israel posters in the Old City, which are anti-Semitic from our side, are not anti-Semitic, but "for compliance with international law", even though they speak of apartheid and genocide. I do not think such a Meining is appropriate in such a place. Anyone who supports terrorist organizations has, on the one hand, no understanding of Israel and Judaism, is no friend of Jews and, on the other hand, no understanding of the Middle East. Then you also have to be in favour of giving Crete and Rhodes etc. back to the Turks because they ruled there for a while. But fine, any way she likes. As I said, a well-preserved historic place.

This is a must see site - especially if you are Jewish as Greece has a rich Jewish history that unfortunately the lunatics of the world tried totally destroying however guess what - Jews win.

Jewish communities in Crete have existed since the 4th and 3rd centuries BCE when Jews from Israel (Palestine in the correct form) and Egypt first established settlements on the island (and elsewhere in Greece) following the conquest and Hellenisation of the Near East by Alexander the Great.

Be sure to support and check out this gorgeous destination which is in the most romantic part of the old city - in a four block radius where the Jewish community lived until they were taken hostage by the Nazis and placed on a boat heading to Auchwitz. Unfortunately the British Navy sunk the boat en route which totally wiped out the Jewish population from Crete. Thank God, it's now growing again and could use a visit and donation from you - and trust me it's well worth the visit to learn of the history by a dedicated staff.

To gain access, you need to ring the bell during normal opening hours. Once inside, you are able to wander freely or join one of the scheduled tours.

There are plenty of information boards and an exhibition of the restoration of the Synagogue

We had a really good trip to the synagogue in Chania, where we joined the guided tour. The guide told very vividly about the history of the synagogue.

What an interesting, emotional place. Our guide took us to this synagogue; I had never heard of it and would not have even noticed the entrance. It is small. To walk around takes no time. But hearing from the gentleman inside about the history of the Jews in Crete--which predates the time of Jesus--was so fascinating. And the fate of the last survivors after over 2000 years was tragic. But the fact that non-Jews have maintained and kept this synagogue going and have regular services there, just restores your faith in humanity a little. The host mentioned a bar mitvah occuring there--isn't that a wonder? So happy we were able to visit and learn.

This synagogue is located in the historic center of the city, among other medieval buildings. The original temple is a 14th century Venetian church, which was donated as a synagogue to the Jewish community in the 17th century during Ottoman rule. The building was abandoned after the elimination of the Jewish community caused by the Nazis, the roof collapsing in 1995, and in 1999 it began to be recovered.
It is open to visitors from Monday to Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. all year round, and from May to October it is open until 6:00 p.m. from Monday to Thursday. Admission is free, although they give the option to make a donation to help with the maintenance and conservation of the place. As it is not a very large space, the visit does not require too much time, we were there for just under half an hour. Taking photos and videos is allowed.
When we arrive at the door where the schedules appear, we find it closed. We rang the bell and they graciously opened it for us, allowing us to visit the synagogue on our own at our own pace. As we entered there was a small garden and after it we reached the prayer room, a small one in which the closet that houses the ritual objects draws attention. On the opposite side of the garden is the room where ritual baths were performed. There are also stairs that lead to a small room from which you can see the prayer room, which I thought was intended for women during worship, although it seemed too small to me. Later I read that in this synagogue men and women did not occupy different places as happens in other larger synagogues.
It is an interesting visit for fans of history and religious culture, and it is a very quiet place that is not saturated with visitors. In addition, there is a certain emotional connection for those of us who come from Spain because the Jewish community that lived in Greece was of Sephardic origin. This, together with the thought that the synagogue witnessed the horror suffered by the 400 Jews who were detained by the Nazis for their extermination, provokes a certain emotion, which increases interest in visiting it, in addition to the beauty of the ancient architecture.

Worth a visit considering the one-time importance of the Jewish community. As was often the case during the wartime years, the story of the Cretan Jews did not end well – the vast majority of these unfortunate people were rounded up in 1944 and shipped off to Europe, with Auschwitz-Birkenau the ultimate destination. Fate intervened when the vessel was torpedoed by a British submarine – there were no survivors. You’ll find a small plaque commemorating this event in the garden. As for the synagogue itself, you’ll notice the original Venetian doorway on the way in, and the traditional mikveh, where traditional purification would take place. You will probably also be treated to some explanations of the workings of the synagogue by one of a team of volunteers guides

When in Rome! What a pretty hidden gem. Centuries of history has seen this synagogue survive challenges of destruction but in peacetime this is an educational experience.

The tour is over quickly but it is worth the visit. Be respectful and open to the history of this little gem of religion.

So much to love in this seaside city. The old town with its narrow, winding medieval streets (you can touch wall to wall on one lane ), the interesting shops, the seaside restaurants. I love swimming and sunbathing in Nea Chora, the beach in Chania. The food. The Friday night services at Etz Hayyim synagogue, restored by the international community after the original community (established in the 3rd century BCE) was arrrested by Nazis. The people, the museums, music in the clubs. Good internet. Unique, beautiful flora everywhere.
