Superb experience of plaza and spinolonga

Superb experience we drove from hersonissos analipsis to plaza
Parked car opposite boat quay and paid approx €10 across to the island
We did our own tour walking around walked town I had just read Victoria hislop a book the island and it was how I imagined
Sad regarding the lepers plight but insightful as how they managed and created a community
Would definitely recommend

Ask for Georgina when registering to English tours of Spinalonga!

While visiting Crete, I was invited on a tour to the Spinalonga island. The tour guide – Georgina – was excellent! She's an expert story teller with over 20 years of experience and was super patient with everyone's questions. She told us about the history of Crete, the Spinalonga island, and how social attitudes around leprosy evolved over time.

Thank you so much for the excellent experience and conversations, Georgina – next time I'm Crete I'll take another tour just to meet you again!

Worth visiting to understand how hard it must have been.

Took a ferry from Elounda which was €8 each. Ferry took about 15 minutes and then left you for just over a hour which was easily enough time to wander around. There is little information provided about the island other than on boards as you are walking around. Perhaps it would have been better to have had a guide but the queues for these were long and it we enjoyed the walk at our own pace.

The weather was very hot and there is little shade near the entrance kiosk when you are waiting for the ferry back, so a hat might be a good idea.

Une autre visite de la Crète

En cette période, il y a moins de monde et nous avons pris un bateau à Plaka. Les horaires sont variables mais ce n’est pas très grave.
Avec un départ à 10h, il n’y avait pas beaucoup de monde sur l’île, sauf des groupes avec guide. Nous avons fait notre visite seuls, avec nos informations et c’était très bien ainsi.
Nous avons mangé sur place car nous avions notre pique-nique. Il y a de nombreux endroits pour se poser avec une vue exceptionnelle.
A notre retour nous avons pris un café sur une terrasse face au petit port pour profiter de la quiétude locale.

Man könnte noch mehr daraus machen

Die kleine Insel Spinalonga war in der ersten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts eine der letzten Leprakolonien Europas und gilt heute als eine Hauptattraktion des östlichen Kretas. Unsere Erwartung war entsprechend hoch. Wir parkten unseren Mietwagen am Hafen von Plaka und nahmen dort eines der Ausflugsschiffe zur Insel. Für die gut fünfminütige Überfahrt bezahlten wir schon einmal stolze 10 Euro pro Person. Anschliessend kamen auf der Insel nochmals je 8 Euro für den Zutritt zur Anlage dazu. 18 Euro wären halbwegs okay, wenn Besuchern etwas Ordentliches geboten würde. Ausser Ruinen und einer gut erhaltenen Häuserzeile mit ein paar wenigen Informationstafeln gibt es allerdings nur wenig zu sehen. Klar, man hat eine tolle Aussicht vom höchsten Punkt der Insel und es führt ein ca. 20 minütiger, gut ausgebauter Weg um die Insel herum. Aber ohne Reiseführer oder Vorabrecherche hat man kaum eine Chance, sich ein wirklich umfassendes Bild von der spannenden Geschichte der Insel zu machen. Dabei gäbe viele Möglichkeiten, den Ort noch attraktiver zu gestalten. Warum wird bsp. das Innere der Häuser nicht restauriert, um ein Gefühl vom schwierigen Alltag der Bewohner zu vermitteln? Warum gibt es vor Ort keine Guides, welche Touristen ähnlich wie beim Palast von Knossos durch die Anlage führen? Man könnte noch viel aus Spinalonga herausholen. Im Moment sind die 18 Euro jedenfalls unserer Meinung nach zu hoch.

Overhyped

It possibly did not help that we had an 8 hour coach trip to spend 50 minutes on the island. But once there we were so disappointed. We walked around it in 30 minutes. We had no paper guide to explain what anything was. We just saw lots of half standing or partly renevated buildings. Do not go to their little drinks shop - prices are astronomical. Probably the most dissapointing site we have visited in all our holidays through Greece.

Need longer than the boat companies offer.

Loved going to Spinalonga, a great testimony to a man who wanted to give the suffering lepers a better life.
However, the 70 minutes you get from the Elounda boat companies is simply not long enough to get a good look around and climb to the top.
The views from the top are stunning but the time it took to get up there, explore and then back down left insufficient time to explore or walk around the full island.
An alternative might just be to take a boat from Plaka which is much closer, so works more like a taxi.
