It’s an exceptionally good and well preserved Greek Orthodox Monastery!
Plenty of buildings and exhibits to see and decent presentation. On a large ground area with super big parking too.
Well worth the drive up there

The Monastery of Arkadi is a well-preserved monastery. The admission for 4,- € we found appropriate. During a tour you could get an idea of how the monks lived.

Lovely to have a look at the monastery and the art they have on show.
Women have to cover up bare arms/ legs which they give to something to use. Costs €2 for entry

This is not only a beautiful monastery, it is a story that people should know. What happened here during the Greek uprising, is a sad but important part of Greek history. It is so worth the drive.

During our time in Crete, we visited the Monastery of Arkadi, a site rich in both history and cultural significance. Nestled in the hills near Rethymno, this 16th-century monastery serves not only as a spiritual center but also as a powerful symbol of Crete’s long struggle for independence. The stunning blend of Venetian and Byzantine architecture drew us in immediately. As we entered the courtyard, the imposing central church stood proudly, and the serene atmosphere invited reflection, even as we sensed the weight of the history surrounding us.
Inside, we learned about the heroic and tragic events of the 1866 Cretan revolt against Ottoman rule. Our guide recounted the story of hundreds of Cretan rebels and civilians who sought refuge within the monastery’s walls. Rather than surrendering to the Ottomans, they chose to sacrifice themselves by detonating barrels of gunpowder, turning Arkadi into a symbol of resistance and freedom. Walking through the peaceful grounds, it was hard to imagine the turbulent past, but the powerful legacy of that moment in history was unmistakable.
The small museum on-site further deepened our understanding of Arkadi’s significance. Artifacts and relics on display brought to life the resilience of the Cretan people and their struggle for independence. Visiting the Monastery of Arkadi was an emotional and thought-provoking experience, a reminder of the sacrifices made for freedom. For anyone exploring Crete, Arkadi is a must-see destination that offers both a rich historical perspective and a deep sense of reverence for the island’s enduring spirit.

Overall, the buildings are in good condition. The visit is nice. On the other hand no maintenance, we see a landfill With various objects of car carcasses, all this can disappear, by doing a big cleaning You have electric cables on the ground, water inlets that pass by very beautiful monuments, very disappointed, it could maintain a little better and especially clean

Incredible place with a lot of history. Me and my family went on our own and yet, there are explanations on all sides. I believe a Guide would make all the difference.

Beautiful Monastery about 30 minutes from Bali, on a winding but good road. It will take 4€ per person without any age difference.
The visit is done in about 35 minutes.
A nice visit to do but be careful if you have difficulty moving (crutches or armchair) there are stone floors but this is not impossible.
There is a dining area outside the monastery.
Parking is in front of the monastery and free.
