Richard was fantastic. He guided our family through Rosenborg Castle, and we learned so much about the Danish Royal family, history, and Denmark in general. I highly recommend booking Richard for any tour you want of Copenhagen! Especially in the castle, he pointed out interesting things I never would have noticed on my own. Loved every minute of it!

We did the tour in late-July 2023. It was an excellent tour and he did engage our 8 and 10-yr olds. The 8-yr old may have been too young for the history (plus it was raining so her interest was low). This tour was excellent!!! We enjoyed it so much and learned quite a bit about HCA, Copenhagen, and Denmark itself. We highly recommend this t our. Stopped at the tower where you walk up a ramp to the observatory (not part of the tour but where it ended).

I’m writing this review almost a year later as I’m sitting in my kitchen in California, remembering my first (and so far, only) trip to Copenhagen last summer. I took two tours with Richard: the HCA tour and one of the Rosenborg Castle. Both were excellent! Richard is charming and knowledgeable. He knows the city and many of its people, so everywhere you go, he introduces you to people, restaurants, and sites. Of course, he talks about HCA, but also about the city in general, history, food, etc. When I was there, he was doing a tour of the Rosenborg Castle for a Rick Steves’ group and I got to join that one, too. Richard focused us on specific things and put them in context. It was so much better than just wandering through on my own. I would take another tour with him in a heartbeat and I recommend that you do, too!

Richard provided an entertaining and delightful overview of Danish culture and society, in the guise of HC Anderson. His tour was both educational and fun. Highly recommended!

Richard is a likeable and well-spoken guide. But the tour is light on sights and heavy on his political agenda. Even if you agree with his socialist politics (and I do), it's just too much. I would have liked learning more about neighborhoods, buildings, and sights to explore later on our own.

Richard Karpen is a master storyteller, who will keep adults and children entertained over a 2-3 tour of central Copenhagen. Dressed as Hans Christian Anderson, he describes Denmark then and now, with profound insights into the culture that most tours do not provide. His coverage of sites are limited to the City Hall area and vicinity, but the what we learned about Danish life, culture, and food was enormous. We highly recommend his tour, which is especially valuable for North Americans as he comes from the U.S. originally and translates cultural differences quite well. Rick Steves also gives him a strong recommendation in his guidebook.

Although this is billed as a HC Andersen tour, after the initial introduction to the story of Andersen's life, there was very little to do with the author himself. It became more about the Danish way of life and how Danes manage the world and produce a wonderful society. The guide dresses like HC Andersen and is happy to answer any and all questions about the author, but the tour seems to be mainly focused on Danish culture. Having said that, Richard is a very knowledgeable and excellent guide who tries to get to know the people on the tour by chatting in between stops and bantering on about his own life and the life of the people he is entertaining. The tour is available in $20 US--the easiest money you will spend for a private guide in your life. Go and enjoy, but be aware that Andersen is only the starting point of the tour, not the end point.

Our tour with Richard (aka Hans Christian Andersen) was the highlight of our three days in Copenhagen. He needs a minimum of 5 people for each day’s tour — but we were the only two who showed up, so we agreed to pay for all 5 people ($100 total), and were really glad we did. Richard put together a customized tour for us with the best parts of the three tours he normally offers. We saw so much and in such depth and had a great time to boot. It was like having a good friend in the city who was anxious to share his home town with you. (Richard is an American who has been spending half of each year in Copenhagen for about 30 years now.) For a good and enlightening time, check him out! (By the way, his website is a bit difficult, but check it out: copenhagenwalks.com

We learnt so much on this tour about the Copenhagen culture, and the Danish way of life. He captivated our attention for the full 90 minutes. I highly recommend this tour!

We actually booked Richard Karpen for a private tour of Rosenborg Castle after reading about him in Rick Steves. He is an excellent guide- very knowledgeable of Danish history. His price for a private tour was very reasonable and it allowed us to go at our own sped and ask lots of questions. We enjoyed him so much that we joined him for his Hans Christian Andersen tour a few days later. Again he was entertaining and full of information on Copenhagen and Danish life and culture. $20 for a 90 minute tour. Best money spent in Copenhagen!

Hi, my sisters and I will be there Mid Sept and want to do this tour as we've heard it's fun. How much was the tour and where is the final stop of the tour?

The charge was $20. We ended at the round tower. Not sure he ends all tours the same place. I would ask at the beginning. It seemed he customized it for the groups interests.
