Leaving aside certain judgments about Finnish history which appear inevitably tainted by partisan prejudice, this museum of the trade union movement - which in reality ends up being a museum of industry, both city and national - can be a useful tool for learning about Tampere life. Industry has in fact been the backbone of "Finnish Manchester" for over a century, and the large amount of workers employed there has formed an important basis of the labor movement and trade unions, which in this city have built a strong organizational network, made up of consumer cooperatives, popular credit institutions, educational and sports societies and so on. Warstas, which is accessed free of charge, reconstructs its salient aspects well, offering written and visual testimonies of great interest for those who want to realize the soul of the places where they go even just for a holiday.

Mielenkiintoinen museo, jossa monta erilaista näyttelyä. Ysärinäyttely oli kaikkein kiinnostavin ja siellä oli paljon tutkittavaa ja kokeiltavaa. Suosittelen. Plussaa ehdottomasti ilmaisesta sisäänpääsystä!

This museum was amazing. Follow the signs and in you go. The museum takes you through the history of industrialisation in Tampere and the workers contribution to the workforce. It was really interesting. It had booths where you could listen to peoples accounts or watch tv news or listen to radio news. There were photographs, clothing as well as machinery etc.
We learned a lot whilst enjoying the atmosphere.

This interesting museum is located in the historic Finlayson factory area.
The exhibitions offer an overview of the history of the industrial era and the social history of workers.
At the same premises, you can also find the Steam Engine Museum.

The history of the city is dominated by its two great cotton mills, Tampella and Finlayson, the latter still operating but manufacturing in Turkey where the cotton grows. Working conditions were hard even 30-40 years ago, the constant noise of the machines and the ever present cotton dust ruined many healths. The force of the rising workers looking for social justice was more than understandable. To keep the factories running the owners were willing to accomodate their staff with housing, health and child care, own shops and managed thus to create a strong sense of community.

The entrance is free. There are points on the floor which could help you to follow the exhibition cronologically. I was not impressed of the exhibition.

Vuosien tauon jälkeen kävin katsomassa näyttelyn. Kaverille ensimmäinen kerta. Werstaassakin muisteltiin kansalaissotaa, kuten Poliisimuseossa.
