The main attraction inside the museum is the Viking Ship Íslendingur (the Icelander). It's a full size replica of a Viking ship and you can walk out onto her. There are plenty of other exhibits in the museum to look at. There are some souvenirs for sale. You can also buy drinks and a few snacks. The area outside the museum is also nice for a walk around. Would recommend a visit to this museum and the staff were helpful and friendly.

Nice ship, but beyond that it was wasted. Spend your time and money on something else. There is a potential, and there was something going on when some areas were being refurbished. Right now it was tired and uninformative

Surprisingly great miseum. We loved everything about it. It's much more innovative than many larger, better funded museums.

... would be a good addition to the Landesmuseum, because in my opinion the chapter “Viking” had fallen far short there.
But it wasn't.
The museum consists essentially of a replica of the “Islendingur”, i.e. the Viking ship replica of the crew led by Captain Eggertsson, who sailed along the route of Leifur Eiriksson on the 1000th anniversary of the discovery of America.
The rest is a lot of text on poorly lit displays - and a few exhibits.
On the upper floor there is practically nothing except access to the deck of the Viking ship.
I find it a pity that the replica of the Viking ship does not replicate the deck structure of the original. After all, people were not sitting unprotected day and night on the open deck. It would have been interesting to see how people lived, slept, cooked and navigated under the superstructure.
With over 3000 Kronis, admission was not exactly cheap either.
If you really want to learn more about the Vikings and their way of life, I recommend going to the small but fine Museum of Land Capture in Reykjavik (871 plus minus 2).

This hotel has a kitschy Viking theme for the many tourists. The staff were so kind and accommodating. We were pleasantly surprised that breakfast was included. We enjoyed our stay except for the on site construction.

A museum with few historical relics, some certainly interesting, such as the reconstructed ship and the funeral boat, and some other interesting pieces. The observation of the seals (when they are there) and the battle simulator on the first floor are appreciable, but the ticket price is decidedly too expensive (over €25 each) for a rather poor museum.

Travelling in Iceland with my teenage son (14 yo) I wanted us to learn some viking history without boring him to death. This place is perfect! It's small, modern, located on the road close to the airport, it has the exact replica of a viking ship that you can walk on and explore in detail, it has a room with some viking history written in English with well presented artefacts that my son found v. interesting AND it has the gameified VR experience upstairs that we both loved. All this takes about 1 hour and ticks several boxes on the agenda. Totally worth it and highly recommended!

Interesting information and a good way to spend some time inside on a rainy day, but just ok. Lots of reading, a few artifacts. The boat was cool, but the boat and the VR experience are the only things other than reading signs to do here. We usually take a long time at museums, but we had read and looked at everything within an hour and a half.

Is there anywhere to store our luggage while seeing this museum? We are staying in Reykjavik and don't want to waste time going back and forth to hotel before the museum.

We stopped at the museum early in the morning while travelling from the airport to Reykjavik. We left our luggage in the rental car in the parking lot. The museum is very small and there are no lockers for belongings.

A 5.5 hour layover will definitely be hard to do both. Essentially you get one or the other because it take about 45 mins to get to Reykjavik and 20 mins to the museum. To get to the museum, the best thing to do is get a taxi, but to go into town you might want to look into getting a car. Hope this helps!

My initial reaction was 1 - 2 hours, but as Dawn has mentioned if you want to walk around outside to see the settlement remains you'd want another half hour. I was blowing a gale when I was there so I skipped the outside part...

In the case of early arrival, we can offer you a breakfast. A price for the breakfast buffet is 1800 isk per person and admission to the museum is included.
The buffet is open from 7:00 to 10:30 and you will pay on the spot.
The buffet consists of coffee and milk, tea, yogurt, sliced bread or baguete with jam/butter, cheese, meat, ham, pepperoni, boiled eggs, croissants, pastries, rolls, fruit salad, warm oat porridge, fruit juice, smoked lamb and herrings.
No seafood or fried eggs and bacon
If you would like to have a breakfast, just let me know date and number of the people.
