It's not the easiest place to reach on public transit, but easy with a car. It's not somewhere to spend a huge amount of time. However, Iceland went through a massive transformation in the mid 20th century. This place shows life as it was less than 100 years ago, albeit unrecognisable against today's Iceland. I really enjoyed it.

A great day out. We did the guided tour which was brilliant and our guide was super knowledgeable and his English was very fluent. The village itself is beautiful to wander around and really well maintained. Definitely recommend and my 11 year old sister loved it too. I love history and this was very informative without being overwhelming.

We spent 4 or 5 hours here! We were treated to a one-to-one guided tour by a very knowledgeable and helpful member of staff in national dress. Throughly enjoyed learning about how people lived in Iceland and how Reykjavík grew to be city it is now. Fascinating stuff.

I bought the city explorer pass, so public transport and entrance to this museum was included - bargain !

In summer they have people in costume - so would feel very authentic. I was there off season - so quiet, but there is a (free) guided tour every day at 1pm - which I highly recommend.

Interesting to see the turf houses and hear the history

We really enjoyed this place. It is a large complex with many buildings and gives you a sense of what life was like in rural Iceland, especially from the 19th through the mid 20th century. It is a different type of museum where you walk in and out of different buildings with exhibits in them, and therefore a welcome change from the usual type of museum. Plan on 1-3 hours depending on how much and thoroughly you wish to go through things. Also they have free tours in English at 1 pm on weekedays, at least.

This was one of the first museums we saw when we arrived in mid-June 2021 for a 30-day exploration of Iceland. We had our own car and arrived to the museum on June 17th which is their Independence Day. We were not aware of this and got to witness the annual "crowning" (actually putting on a fancy veil) of the Fjallkonan or "Lady of the Mountain," some traditional Icelandic dancing, many traditional costumes, and a car show! Additionally, this museum has several old buildings that have been moved here and has one of the 14 turf houses that are listed on the UNESCO World Heritage site's tentative list. The other turf houses are found all over Iceland. Most of the buildings were open and the entire museum is well-marked with signage written in Icelandic and English. There is also a nice gift shop to get souvenirs. We ended up spending over 4 hours here due to the Independence Day festivities. However, you could "rush" through the many buildings and signage in about 1.5 hours. Additionally, the attached turf house interiors here are set up to represent different "eras" whereby the furnishings inside each one match the era at the time. We ended up visiting 4 more turf houses around Iceland since we were so mesmerized with the idea of living in one full-time. The employees were all dressed in various types of heritage garb with one sitting in the turf house to answer any questions that arose. You can catch a local bus or take a cab to get to this museum (not located in central Reykjavik). Also, the Hop-On Hop-Off bus does not stop a this location. Also, there is no food served at this location, but nice fish restaurant just next door. There are also many ore restaurants around the area. By the way, the "ae" in Arbaer is pronounced as a long i-sound like in "pie." This was a great start to our 30-day vacation. Very nicely done!
