The pillar, remains and church, which is multi denomination, are steeped in history, and there are plenty of informative boards and photo opportunities. Not to be missed if you are interested in the beauty and history of Paphos. A few steps away from the harbour, Marina, restaurants, bars and bus stops.

When I first visited Paphos in 2009 the staging did not exist. Now there is a walkway round the site, which gives good views of the various stones, columns, etc. Again the visit dates only list 12 months of 2022. I last visited in 2018 or a little earlier.

St Paul's Pillar turns out to be part of a marble pillar about 5 foot high. Little evidence that it is actually the place where St Paul was allegedly whipped.
The pillar is situated in the grounds of the early Christian Basilica of Chrysopolitissa which is mush more interest than the pillar.
Luckily the grounds of the church are free to enter.

All'interno del sito che ospita le rovine della basilica di Chrysopolitissa si trova questo pilastro di marmo dove si dice sia stato frustato S. Paolo.
E' indicato da un cartello

The whole site is worth some time to visit. We were there on a Wednesday morning where we got to listen to the organist playing in the church that morning and later participated in the service. It was very special. The church is shared by the Catholic, Anglican and Greek Orthodox. An unexpected highlight. Also note, it is an interesting walk from kato Paphos to get there. We did a series of churches that morning in the area. Most interesting and enjoyable.

An interesting hour spent walking around the perimeter of the site which has its footbridges closed off for safety measures.
Mosaics, ruins, architecture, information boards and parking.
Apparently, it's the tomb and burial place of Erik Ejegod, King of Denmark who was in mid crossing when he stopped here.

Spectacular site of ruins of ancient churches and a subtle feeling that St Paul might was actually have been there

We found this spot whilst on a visit to Paphos Harbour, its listed as a must see for the area and although its great to see the walkways through the ruins were blocked and closed off so you can only view it from the edge. It would have been much better and received more stars from us if you could have got closer.

There were plenty of people around who had come to visit too and the general reaction was disappointment at the closed walkways but with no signs to say why.

Wednesday 5th October and we visited these ancient ruins which are located about five minutes walk from the bus station in Paphos

At the heart of the ruins is the Church of Agia Kyriaki Chrysopolitissa (reviewed separately).

Sadly when we were here the wooden walkways that traversed the site were closed for safety reasons, they were rotting. However, we were able to walk around and appreciate the ruins and the mosaics.

According to local legend it is believed that St Paul was tied to one of the pillars to receive a punishment of forty lashes.

The tomb and burial place of Erik Ejegod, King of Denmark is also here.

There is no entrance fee to visit here
