We toured the monastery through Viking and it is definitely worth seeing. The view alone of the valley from the top is amazing. The church and grounds are beautiful and immaculate. One building dates from before 1100. They grow grapes and apricots and make wine and apricot products. We tried the apricot juice and it was amazing! They have tastings of wine as well as a wonderful gift shop. It has been one of my favorite tour stops thus far!

Gottweig Abby is a working Benedictine Abby that is over one thousand years old. It's located on top of a mountain overlooking Krems - with beautiful views.
The church is historic and beautiful.
The Abby is also famous for its vineyards, wines and apricot juice.

We went on a Viking river cruise tour to the Abbey. Beautiful views of the valley. Tour of the Abbey was very good. We had a nice tasting of their famous apricot nectar, and apricot wine. Really enjoyed the Danube river cruise!

The Benedictine Abbey sits on the top of Gottweig Mountain overlooking the Wachau Valley and thousands of acres of farmland. There was so much fog we never got to see the abbey until we were right on top of it. It is an impressive sight with it twin towers and colorful red roofs. It is truly Austria’s spiritual treasure- such a serene and quiet place. Göttweig means "Way of God.” It was founded in 1083 by Blessed Altmann (c. 1015–1091), Bishop of Passau. The views from the winery and monastery are amazing. We were able to look down over a centuries-old church and cemetery. The monks still live and work in the abbey. The Abbey complex is expansive, made up of a walled courtyard, gardens, the main abbey, a cloister with a crypt and a church. We started our tour with a short film on the history of the abbey and the monks. Then, we sampled the sparkling apricot wine, which was really good.
This stunning example of baroque design features the monumental imperial staircase with the ceiling fresco by Paul Troger from 1739. It is one of the largest and most beautiful staircases of its kind in the world. The Abbey library has 130,000 books and manuscripts, a collection of religious engravings, coins, antiquities and musical and natural history manuscripts, all of which survived World War II. We visited the church, which features a beautiful ceiling, an ornate altar (lots of gold) and a grand pipe organ.

The 13,000-acre Abbey contains vineyards from which Wachau Valley wines are produced and Wachau marille (a specific type of apricot) trees from which jams, jellies and nectars are produced. We were treated to a tasting of their famous apricot wines which included some whites, some reds and even some Marillenschnaps (apricot brandy). We just wish that there was not so much fog.

Ja neben dem bekannten Stift Melk ist der Stift Göttweig eventuell nicht so bekannt,so kam es uns zumindest vor,denn der Besuch war ungeplant und somit spontan zustande gekommen.Was wir aber keineswegs bereut haben,denn die Anlage ist weiträumig und sehr gepflegt.
Wir haben die angenehme Ruhe genossen und auch in den Innenräumen war eine angenehme Ruhe vorhanden,so konnte das Museum,welches sich im Kaisertrakt befindet,erkundet werden.
Von einer Aussichtsterasse kann ein hervorragender Panoramablick über die Landschaft schweifen.
Ein Spontan Besuch welcher sich allemal gelohnt hat.
Wir haben die angenehme Ruhe genossen und auch in den Innenräumen war eine angenehme Ruhe vorhanden,so konnte das Museum,welches sich im Kaisertrakt befindet,erkundet werden.
Von einer Aussichtsterasse kann ein hervorragender Panoramablick über die Landschaft schweifen.

A grand exterior perched high above the surrounding vineyards with a particularly elaborate baroque interior.

We visited here during a river cruise excursion and wow, were we impressed! You will see so much here. They provide tasting of the wines and other items produced by the Abbey. You can purchase those items and others at their really high quality gift shop. The tour includes the fascinating history of the Abbey and its numerous gorgeous buildings. This is still a working Abbey, so you get a taste of what the monks do to help their local community. We were fortunate to meet one of the monks and hear what his life is like today. It was so educational! If you are in the area, Gottweig Abbey is a must visit!

The abbey is fantastic. The tour starts with beverages prepared on the premise and then there is a tour of the abbey, church and museum. The facility overlooks the Wachau Valley. Beautiful artwork. Very peaceful.

Approximately 40 monks reside in the Göttweig Abby. The grounds are lovely, and include a cathedral, a museum - with an amazing fresco painted in 1739 - and a beautiful view of the valley below.

Are we able to buy non-food products from your gift shop? I bought a bone china mug with a tomte on it and was so sorry I did not buy the other pieces in the line after I returned home. I live in the United States.
