"Petersfdriedhof" (St. Peter's Cemetery) is behind St. Peter's Church. It is the oldest cemetery in Salzburg, and the oldest tombstone dates from 1288.
You can see burials of local architects, mayors, painters, opera singers, poets and historians. Notable burials include those of Ignatz Anton von Weiser (Mozart librettist),
Michael Haydn (younger brother of Joseph Haydn), Maria Anna Mozart (elder sister of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart).
In the cemetery there is also the entrance to the catacombs (reviewed separately), and two small beautiful chapels dedicated to Mariazell Madonna and to St. Margareth.

Unique cemetery in the heart of town made famous from the Sound of Music. Very popular with the tourists. There are also some catacombs built into the rock which you can visit for a small fee.

While walking around the old town, stopping and walking through Petersfriedhof is a must. You can also take a tour of the catacombs. It's interesting seeing the different graves and tombs along with the different flowers and plants on the burial plots.

It is a lovely place. With Salzburg card we were able to see the catacombs free. In my opinion, the catacomb is not that exciting, so I am happy, that I do not paid for it separately. The cemetery itself is more interesting than the catacombs.

I loved that part of the city of Salzburg. The cemetery is beautiful. It is very well kept and full of beautiful flowers 💐. If you look up you can see the castle. This is a beautiful city. No one should die without visiting her 😍

We loved this beautiful cemetery at the foot of the castle. It is easy to navigate & walk around & a peaceful haven within the city. Unfortunately the chapel is closed.

This peaceful, historic cemetery is a bit off the beaten path, but it is worth a look. It is very well-maintained and ornate.
As you may know, the movie "The Sound of Music" was set in Salzburg and many locations around the town were used for filming different scenes. Our guide told us that this cemetery was used at the end of the movie for the scene where the von Trapp family was hiding from the Nazis before making their escape into the mountains. A bit has changed in the cemetery in the 60 years since that movie was made, but it is interesting to see this place. If you like the movie, check out this location.

Fascinating place to walk around and see. Beautiful flowers in all the graves and so much history. We stumbled across it and enjoyed a stroll through it. You can enter one way and exit another

This oasis of peace and greenery in the center of Salzburg's power center is truly a place to see.
To be honest, we have never visited a cemetery while traveling before, but for this one we wanted to make an exception.
It is a real historical gem still in use and it is surrounded by the steep mountainside of the Monnchsberg and some of the most beautiful buildings in this city.
The very diverse graves are well maintained and there are real gems.
