On our circuit in Norway, we also have visited the “Garmo Stave Church in Lillehammer.
The church is at the top of the hill near the entrance to the Openair Museum situated at the Maihaugen museum, it is the most striking building at the museum with its pointed tower with dragon heads on the ridges of the roof gazing out to the horizon. The church was built early in the 1200s, but has been extended several times, most recently in the year 1730. This is when it was given the current characteristic cross shape. The church stood originally at Garmo in Lom. It was pulled down in 1880, but the materials were kept and the church was reconstructed at Maihaugen in the year 1921. The church is in use for services during the summer months and on a Saturday you might find a newly married couple here. We got the opportunity to see a marriage during our visit, very nice.

Eine der schönsten alten "Stab-Kirchen" von Norwegen. Sie stand bis 1880 in Garmo, Lom. Ein alter Zahnarzt aus Lillehammer, ein Kulturschatz-Sammler kaufte/ersteigerte die Kirche nach Abriss; die Materialien, sowie alles an Ausschmückungen gingen unter einer Auktion unter den Hammer. Heute steht die Kirche als eine von mehreren Hauptattraktionen im "Maihaugen Freilichtmuseum", Lillehammer.
Als Besonderheit muss genannt werden, dass die Altertafel einmal viel früher für die erste Kirche in Lillehammer, auch eine Stab-Kirche, hergestellt/geschnitzt wurde. Nach Abriss dieser Kirche im Jahre 1733 wurde die Tafel nach Garmo verkauft.
Als weitere Besonderheit möchte ich gerne erwähnen, dass meine Tochter hier vor vielen Jahren getraut wurde; Bild anbei :)
Die Kirche steht weiterhin in Dienst! - hauptsächlich für Trauungen, an Samstagen! im Sommerhalbjahr. Ansonsten Eintrittskarte lösen beim Eingang zum Freilichtmuseum.
Dann nichts wie hin - eins der grössten Erlebnisse im Leben, die Hochzeit! , einfach anfragen und bestellen! - vielleicht ein Job für Tripadvisor!? :)

Fin predikstol, fint altarskåp, men ack så mörkt härinne. Kyrkan är placerad i Maihaugen så du måste gå in dit om du vill se kyrkan. Kyrkan är klart sevärd så ett besök här kan REKOMMENDERAS.

Maihaugen is de moeite van het bezoeken waard en dit kerkje is erg bijzonder. Klein en van binnen eenvoudig en sfeervol. Leuk dat het ook nog wordt gebruikt voor bijvoorbeeld bruiloften. Er kunnen zo'n 70 man in. Nederlandstalige gids (bij toeval) wist ook veel te vertellen.

While passing Garmo on our way from Lom to Ornes I saw the new Garmo church built on the site of the old stavkirke which is now located in Maihaugvegen open air museum. We were planning to see it but the price tag of NOK 175 pp seemed to be a bit high as I had no interest in seeing the rest of the museum, and the Garmo Stave Church was practically reconstructed without a clear indication how much of the original materials has been salvaged or how the church looked originally. And since the church can be seen from the parking lot I opted to save some money, take pictures of it and leave.

A very beautiful example of a Norwegian wooden church. The area has an almost medieval vibe to it.

Garmo kirke er fin liten kirkebygg på Maihaugen. Den er mye brukt til brylluper. Virkelig flott bygning.

We saw this while on tour of the open air museum and so received a lot of information. None of the items inside the church are original except the baptismal font. The other items, alter etc. are from other similar churches. These churches are 800 yrs old and originally they were thought 1100 existed. Sadly only 27 exist today so don’t miss out on seeing this. It is still used today for weddings.
