Had a very nice tour of the Konserven museum from Piers: he told us about the history of canning and gave demonstrations of the old machines. Interactive, served with British humour. Thank you very much Piers!

We really enjoyed our trip to the Canning museum. Our guide was great (sorry didn't get his name). The process was well explained and the old methods of production was really interesting.

There are two museums in one place: typography museum and canning museum.
You start your tour with a TYPOGRAPHY exhibition which shows you history of a typography, WWII propaganda pictures and information influence nowadays.
Second part is a CANNING MUSEUM. Actually it’s really interesting museum which shows the whole process of producing canned fish. Everything is very clear, you can also try to play it if you’re visiting the museum with a guide :) The museum isn’t big, so it’ll take approximately 1.5 hours to see all the exhibits. There is a small restaurant on site.
Your tickets are also valid for other museums in Stavanger in the same day + with this tickets you’ll have a 50% discount for Oil museum.

Short but interesting view of the canning industry as it used to be. Very authentic experience.
The section on Propaganda was unexpected but welcome. Some irony involved given today's political events.
I didn't appreciate the Obama -Trump Fake News audio example being played over every 30 seconds.. what does it have to do with print? I found it offensive and think there's better examples.

How does the fish get into the can? In this former canning factory, you can find out all the relevant information very nicely.
From fishing to further processing, everything is explained here using some of the original equipment. The audio guide, which you can get for free when you enter, is also written in German and is included free of charge for the duration of the visit.
We were able to take home a lot of information and met lots of friendly staff.
The canning museum is right next to the graphics museum. Unfortunately, not all areas, e.g. House No.90, are accessible for people with walking difficulties.
We used the museum without any problems with the entrance ticket for the Maritime Museum, which, like the canning and graphics museum, belongs to the "MUST" group. For just under 12.00 euros (14 KR) you basically get a day ticket for all the museums in the group.
It was a great visit.

This is a gem of a museum in the old part of town. It displays all the old ways that sardines and kippers were processed and all the interesting labels and cans used. Of course it was the women's job to string up the sardines to hang for smoking and the women also hand packed the sardines at amazing rates head to toe into the cans. The museum offers an area where you can practice packing plastic sardines to see how long it takes you. The museum also had Norwegian explorer, Roald Amundsen's can of fish that he took on his famous South Pole expedition! In the last room they are smoking the sardines and you can have a delicious sample!!

Actually this was a lot more interesting than it sounds! It is combined with the label-printing museum, joint entry, and you go round the label part first (which is ok but not as good as the canning), then into the canning part, which has a very confusing layout but a lot of interesting history about the fish canning industry in the area, including some fantastic old machinery, and the chance to see how good you are at fitting sardines into a tin! When we were there, there was an Englishman, now living in Norway, demonstrating the machines and explaining how they work, which was great. He was very knowledgeable.

Would like to know where to find labels, tins, from Fredrikstad Preserving Co.Stavanger was the main city for the Brisling sardin production, but not to forget other cities who had the same industry.Fredrikstad had a lot of manufacturers, who mostly produced for Bjelland in Stavanger. Some did their own export,as for example Fredrikstad Preserving, who did not want be depending of Bjelland, and therefore opened their own american market by the sales manager as late as year 1928.(Also other banned fish food.
The name sardines was prohibited to use as this was the Portuguese name for the big sardines.Therefor norwegian producers had to call their product "sild sardines" or mostly used Brisling sardines, which reflected to the name of these smaller fishes.
