Rieux Minervois is not a Mecca for national or international tourism, we must not hide it. But this town of 2,000 inhabitants has within it a unique religious building: a heptagonal church. Its origins are vague or even unknown. One thing is certain, the Byzantine inspiration is present.
To visit it, the entrance fee is three euros, four with a guide. It's not expensive and it allows you to spend 30 minutes (or more if you want) in a building hiding a lot of things.
The welcome is smiling and the accent lilting. Two leaflets are given. The first on the Master of Cabestany, an anonymous sculptor from the second half of the 12th century, who participated in the work of the church of Rieux as well as many other buildings in Spain and Italy in particular. The second leaflet deals with the church itself and is valuable because it is the only source of information. Better to have a knowledge or two in terms of religious art, architecture and liturgy.
Starting with the numerous Corinthian-style capitals which, for me, are the stars of the visit. They are numerous and represent a significant number of figures. I stopped at the one with the Lions, the Assumption or even the one with the creatures that can devour each other. They frame each chapel.
Speaking of the chapels, all of them are interesting. In that of the Entombment, we note the predominant presence of local red marble. The chapel of Saint Roch is inaccessible due to large cracks but you can see the saint's altarpiece, as well as a stained glass window from the end of the 19th century representing him and Saint Anthony. In an unnamed chapel there is a poorly presented organ, without any information, I found that a shame. The Rosary Chapel is decorated with a large Virgin and Child against a backdrop of sculpted religious buildings. The chapel of Joan of Arc is more modern with its completely redone vault and its white marble altar with golden lilies.
In one of the chapels (which I identified as that of Saint Anne but I think I am wrong) there is a small memorial museum. You have to activate the timer to see an ivory parishioner from 1880 appear behind a double glass door, a prie-dieu from the late 19th century, a reliquary bust of Saint James in olive wood from the 18th century and many other liturgical objects. .
In one of the chapels there is a modern stained glass window by Dom Ephrem which seems out of place in this very old church. On the other hand, the painting by François Saissac from 1669 representing the crowned Virgin and Child is worth seeing.
In the center of this 18 meter diameter church is a flaming red marble main altar above which a golden crucifix and two chandeliers with tassels have been hung. The terrazzo floor dates from the 1930s. When you leave the building, you can admire the perfectly preserved tiled roof. At the top of the bell tower sits an enormous green rooster, oxidized green by time.
The church is surrounded by modern buildings, you can even park all around it, which I found a shame because it somewhat erases the interest of the whole thing seen from the outside. Nevertheless, the detour is worth it and the cost.

The gentleman on the information desk was charming and gave us the relevant leaflets, unlocked the door, and left us to it! Marvellous! We were able to wander around in our own time and look at the treasures in this little church.
Just be aware - the warden is a strict time keeper and will not let you in if you arrive just before closing time - or lunch time - but hey ho - this is France.

Église romaine du XIIe siècle, conçue comme une rotonde à tour heptagonale. Cela vaut la peine de voir, une construction impressionnante. En outre, l'église est l'un des bâtiments où vous pouvez voir des sculptures de Maître du Cabestany, qui a travaillé dans la seconde moitié du 12ème siècle.
Et la vieille dame, qui s’occupe des visiteurs, connaît beaucoup de choses sur l’église et sur le village de Rieux - mais laisse les visiteurs tranquilles afin qu’elles puissent regarder l’intérieur de l’église en paix. Quand dans le Minervois: allez-y, jetez un coup d'œil!

Después de hacer varios kilómetros para ver esta joya, veo que en la puerta hay un cartel que dice: "para visitas dirigirse a la oficina de turismo" y como está a diez pasos de la puerta, me dirijo allí y veo otro cartel que pone que la oficina de turismo permanecerá cerrada hasta el mes de marzo. Me parece que esperar cuatro meses es como la espera del dermatólogo y decido que en otra ocasión quizás me detenga a visitarla. Pongo la calificación de "muy bueno", porque el edificio aparentemente es interesante, excepto la aparente `presencia de un garage entre dos capillas. (Ver foto)

Für den Besuch erhält man einen Schlüssel und eine kurze Information über das historische Monument. Das Achteck ist eine Kirche mit besonderem Charakter, die von der Gemeinde gut erhalten wurde. Freunde alter Gemäuer sind hier genau richtig.
