We visited the tearoom this morning. Coffee and food were very good but I do find a charge of £16.30 for two flat white coffees - one cheese scone and one sausage roll rather excessive.

Hello, thank you for leaving us a review. Our coffee and all of our food is sourced locally, our cakes and sausage rolls are made exclusively for our Beth Chatto Tearoom and I'm sure you can understand that all of the costs that go into making such delicious things have risen dramatically in the last few years. Having heard about the garden on tv and in magazines we looked forward to visiting whilst on holiday. The whole garden is glorious, the gravel garden showcased low maintenance gardening whilst the water gardens were very tranquil with resident moorhens and mallards providing extra entertainment. The borders were full of colour early in the season and there were lots of benches to sit and enjoy the views from. We had a look around the nursery as well and had to be very restrained not to fill the car with plants!

Oh no, not another garden centre as my wife organized a detour on a trip to the coast. Well, this was so much more. Stunning gardens, charming knowledgeable staff and really appreciated the commitment to what is obviously a special place. Could see the years and years of hard work that had been invested in the garden and the special dry weather sections were impressive. There is a massive commercial nursery as well with top quality plants for sale (prices reasonable for the quality) and grown on site which seemed quite special (and environmentally friendly). Nice cafe and gift shop too, a great destination for anyone who likes their gardens. Just be prepared to come out poorer with some lovely plants that you probably didn’t need but will enjoy for several years …

The display gardens are well appointed to display plants specific to different types of gardens: dry and arid gardens, damp and shady gardens.
The adjoining garden centre has the plants available that you see in the gardens along with expert advice from staff.
Well worth visiting for some inspiration.

I have been waiting to visit this garden for ages and certainly well worth the long drive fro. West Midlands. Make a few days if your trip, there's plenty to do/seebin and around Colchester.
If I lived neater I would visit every season, or more likely volunteer to work there.
The gardens are the perfect set up to understand Beth's philosophy of right plant, right place. I think everyone will find an area to suit their own garden circumstances.
I'm totally inspired to do some rearranging of some of my borders, starting with the excellent plants I bought from the plant centre.
Staff very knowledgeable and friendly. Can't comment on the cafe as didn't go in.

A beautiful afternoon spent here with my parents, not sure how much it was to get in as my dad paid but the gardens were stunning, the gardeners were very very helpful and friendly, as well as knowledgeable and the nursery had some very reasonably priced plants and a lot of them you wouldn’t see in standard garden centres or if they are are nearly double the price and half the size
Fell in love with the border planting and helped me work out how to get my borders with varying height and fill in the spaces
Love that by buying the plants there helps pay to run it, will definitely be back for more plants for my garden and to enjoy the garden planting as the season changes
The coffee and scones were lovely too

The gardens are nice but the entrance fee is too expensive for the size of the garden. Also I was annoyed that I couldn’t pay for lunch or even an ice cream with cash. I’m afraid I will not be returning.

Hi, thank you for your feedback. I'm sorry to read that you feel our entry price is too expensive. We have carefully considered the cost of entry to help cover the costs of maintaining the Gardens. In 2020, all areas of Beth's Garden's were listed by Historic England as a 'particularly important and early example of an environmentally sustainable garden', so in accordance to this listed status, the Gravel Garden was also incorporated to reflect the Gardens as a whole. Beth Chatto's garden is a joy to behold at any time of the year. There's always something new to see. The planting schemes are amazing. The nursery is great if you want to attempt growing something you've seen - I've had some success over the years. The cafe is also good.

Very disappointing that this is a cashless place now. I wanted to pay for a plant in cash but was told they are now cashless. We were told it was because there aren't many bank that take cash anymore.
Also, the dry garden used to be free to have a wonder around before going for a cup of tea and a slice of cake.
Sorry but you have made a bad choice in doing so, and missed me buying some tea and cake (which I always did in the past). I won't be returning unless you start using cash again.

In 2020, Beth's Gardens were listed by Historic England as a 'particularly important and early example of an environmentally sustainable garden', so in accordance to the listed status the Gravel Garden was incorporated to reflect the Garden as a whole and became part of the 5 Garden Experience. Many of our visitors choose to purchase a 'Friends of the Garden' Membership giving them unlimited garden entry throughout the year, so if necessary they can just visit the Gravel Garden or other areas at a much more discounted price than the usual visitor fee as many times as they like for a year. We have visited a lot of gardens and this was one of the best we have visited. Extremely well kept, attractive and well laid out. We appreciated the the amount of plant signage and plentiful seating around the gardens. Good tea and cake too!! Wish it was a little closer to where we live as the annual membership looks very reasonable.

Don’t think they have picnic areas there as I didn’t see any. The cafe area is really good though and there are plenty of places to sit.

I am sorry but this question got lost in Tripadvisor and we have only just seen it.. Yes there are baby changing facilities in the disabled toilet so plenty of space and can be used by mum or dad. We are also breastfeeding friendly!
