I see a lot of reviews questions by the price. What makes it good value is the 45 min guided tour which is actually an additional cost. Glyn does a great job, full of facts, stories and local history. She was excellent. The displays are full and very detailed. I think you get quite a lot. 2000 years of history is indeed a lot to squeeze in. Won’t be for everyone but young children and anyone interested in various historical aspects will love it. Some interactive parts as well.

Great museum. Well laid out. There were plenty of staff in reception to answer any questions. The exhibits tell the story of Colchester well from the prehistoric upto the mid 20 century. The Roman era is especially well covered which was the main purpose of our visit.
I think the £12.75 entrance fee is at the upper limit. The Gaia exhibition was not to my taste but probably explains what the entrance fee is covering this year!
A must if you have spare time in Colchester.

Lots of artifacs but most of the castle walls were covered up . Not much history about the castle it self . Over priced for seniors .

My son and I went to Colchester castle for their space exhibit. We both were so disappointed. To start the admission fees are way over priced for what you get to see and do. As you walk around you see more and more interaction exhibits broken, damaged and/or not working. The up keep of the exhibits is very disappointing and poor especially for what you pay to get in. And the space exhibit itself was a complete wast of time. The craft was you could colour in a very small paper rocket. The room the speaker was in was so small, cramped and stuffy. Definitely would not recommend to anyone. What I would recommend is Ipswich Museum. By far much better.

My family of four from NYC didn't realize that this was a retrofitted artifact museum with no focus on who lived in the castle and what life was like. It was a pricey mistake. If that's what you're going for, great, just know that before you pay admission.

Very expensive for what it is. Cost £36 for 2 students, 1 child and one adult and taking our time we were finished in an hour. We could have paid yet more money (an extra £4 per person) for a tour of the underground and roof too, but we had memories of this place being much bigger, with lots more to do than it actually has. If you’re a Roman history fanatic, then go for it, if you’re just looking for a way to have a family day out, then there are much more cost effective ways of building memories of days out.

Visited with our grown up daughter and her partner who moved to Colchester in December last year. Exceeded our expectations. Very informative account of the history of the castle and area. Beautifully preserved artefacts, nicely displayed and clearly documented. Subdued lighting served to highlight the exhibits themselves. We did not opt to take the tour but, with hindsight, wished we had. Would thoroughly recommend to anyone interested in that period of history and/or archeology in general.

Excellent, lots of interactive displays. We unfortunately didn’t have time for a tour. Unfortunately didn’t have time for a tour of the castle roof and Roman vaults.

Beautiful gardens surround the castle museum which is an added attraction.
So the museum itself no concessions for older people , concessions for little people only.
Lots of artefacts but very dark lighting wise. Five staff at the main desk when we went in which was very surprising personally thought it was an overkill!
No cafe but a room you can eat in (if only we knew no Cafeteria)
Started upstairs wandered Through staff chatting . Went downstairs wandered went through the shop 4 staff in there chatting.
Very disappointed in the experience

Lots of things to see but not like it used to be ,good way to spend an hour or so but then the children wanted to do something else.
Not for younger children as my youngest grandson was board and you have to pay extra for a tour after paying the entrance fee.

There is an entry charge for the Castle Museum, detailed below:
Adult (inc Seniors) £7.60
Child (Aged 4-16) £4.75
Reduced Entrance Fee - Disabled visitors and a carer; full-time students 17+; welfare benefit recipients; and serving
Military personnel - proof of reduced entrance fee status required and may be requested on entry) £4.75
Saver ticket (great for families!) - For two adults and two children OR one adult and three children £20.00
There are also optional extras such as tours and digital tablet hire, which will enhance the visit.

Since visitors' posts estimate over 2 hours to visit and there are only vending machines for snacks, is readmission allowed to take picnics in the car or visit nearby cafes etc.?

i realise this question is over a year old, but it seems that no one has answered and so, for future possible visitors, I can answer the question now! Yes, people can go in and out of the castle to get food from any of the nearby cafe's/pubs/restaurants etc - we just told them at the payment desk and they said it was fine - we already had our tickets for our tour, so only had to show those, if asked. However, always check at the desk to make sure, in case they change the rules at some stage!! The castle park is right next to the castle, and there are seats as well as lots of grass, where you could sit and picnic on a nice day :)

That's all you want when you visit an attraction, dogs barking and #*#* everywhere!
For once in your life, leave your dog at home! Or go take it for a walk!
