Excellent visit for morning coffee and again for afternoon tea. Good prices, excellent coffee and cakes. Lovely staff and good service. What a delight with a beautiful view.

Thursday 10th August and we climbed the steps of Jacob's ladder from the beach up to
the Connaught Gardens on top of the cliff.
Also at the top of the cliff, in the Gardens, is the Clock Tower Cafe, which was formerly a lime kiln, lime was transported up the cliff to the kiln.
The Gardens and it's various secluded and walled sections, measure roughly one and a quarter hectares.
Formerly known as Sea View the Gardens were renamed as Connaught Gardens on the 3rd November 1934. They were dedicated to the use of the public, forever, by His Royal Highness, the Duke of Connaught, hence the name. There is a large plaque to commemorate this, located on a wall behind the statue of the Sidmouth Fiddler.
There is Bandstand with a large lawn in front of it , here there are a wide variety of open air concerts held during the summer. This area is also home to the Statue of the Sidmouth Fiddler, which celebrates fifty years of the Sidmouth Folk Festival.
We wandered through the various sections of the Gardens along with the pathways and walkways. There were flowerbeds filled with colourful seasonal plants and flowers as well as bushes, shrubs, trees, exotic palms and so much more.
From the Gardens there were impressive views of the Town and it's beaches.
We left the Gardens through the Peak Hill Road entrance and walked back into the Town.
There were operational public toilets in the Gardens.

Although we had been to Sidmouth a number of times, this was the first time we visited these gardens. Situated on the headland to the west of the seafront. You can reach it from the main road out of town or via some steps from the sea front. There is also a large car park across the road. These gardens are situated within a series of sheltered walled areas, like outside rooms. There are plenty of beaches, a cafe and toilets. You could easily spent 2/3 hours here. Well worth a visit.

An absolutely beautiful gardens. Makes for a relaxing afternoon visit with many different areas, places to sit overlooking g the beach and a small cafe.
The gardens are beautifully tended and the gardeners are more than happy to talk about the different plants. This place also has a lot of history that’s fascinating to look into while there.

Connaught Gardens is absolutely gorgeous - especially on a sunny summer's day as it was on our visit. It's only small but feels larger when you're walking around it. It's so peaceful there. I could've sat there in there for hours in the warm sunshine admiring the view!
There are many exotic and interesting plants here. This place is clearly loved and very well maintained - full credit to the gardeners. I'd read that the cactus house was worth a visit and they were right! I found it very interesting and there are definitely some big cacti in there! We actually came to Connaught Gardens in the evening a few days before to watch the first of the Summer Season of Concerts by Sidmouth Town Brass band. There's a lovely bandstand overlooking a large well maintained lawn, surrounded by many plants and flowers. There's ample seating and some toilets. My favourite bits were the stone castellations and the stone doorway. It framed the view of Jacob's Ladder beach perfectly! You also have amazing views of the sea in one section and we saw a seal! The gardens are very wildlife friendly. There's the Clock Tower Café and Cakery. The gardens are completely free to enter and can be enjoyed by all. If coming to the gardens on foot via the road, there's a disabled entrance just up from the entrance steps. This is clearly signposted.
I'd say that Connaught Gardens is the best attraction in Sidmouth town centre and a must-see!

A nice tranquil walk around, extremely badly signposted..
Even from the road/foot entrance you cant see signage until directly opposite, much earlier to find from "prom" when just walking gets you to signage.
Unfortunately when we were there the cafe was closed.

Has returned to its pre covid standard. The borders & wild flower areas are superb. The combination of eremerus, Turkish sage + salvia work particularly well in the " cafe " area. Well done the council.

An excellent garden showing a wide range of plants which are extremely rare and well cared by the diligent staff. Fantastic echium plants on show.

Beautiful, well thought out & tended gardens in a fantastic location set on the cliff side, looking out over Sidmouth beaches. Lots of walk ways that lead you to new views & vistas. So many beautiful plants to enjoy, especially loved the gorgeous roses. Highly recommended visit to these gardens. Even better as there free!!!

The review or answer to the survey is not that which appears here now on line. Following my completion of the survey I was asked to write a review. But I had just written a review! You will see that I found this confusing. I had no idea that this was linked to TA. Hence I am asking a question and adding a post script about another hotel. I am a great admirer of both Trip Advisor and the Dromoland Castle Hotel but what you have here does a disservice to both because the way you are collecting the info by linking it in this way is obtuse. Dromoland Castle is an exceptional hotel by any standards but this extended and detailed review of mine which identifies this is missing! I think you need to rework this link system with the hotel so that the writer knows what is 'going on' and the TA readers are given a better understanding.
