I found this monument to Freddie Gilroy interesting especially when reading the associated information board. I think that many people will miss out just by not reading the board!

Saw this monument on our walk round North Bay.
Very large statue, great photo opp whilst learning a little bit of history too.
Recommended when in the area.

There is a strangeness about this sculpture. Freddie Gilroy was local man who was one of the soldiers who liberated the Belsen Concentration camp. The remaining prisoners were known as the stagglers and one can imagine the condition they were in and the effect that had upon him. He is now represented in this larger and life sculpture with his arm resting on the back of the bench. The stragglers are not here but I hope that they are thought of when people pose for selfies etc. It is beautifully positioned and despite its size is not overwhelming despite its name.

A wonderful Marine drive walk with loads of history. Takes you around Olivers mount to the harbour, rides,pubs,fishand chips and slots

I love this statue and the story behind it. If I lived in Scarborough I’d sit with him every time.
I have a few photos of myself with Freddie now and make a point of visiting him on each trip to Scarborough although the climb onto the bench is getting harder as I age 😣

My family and I always come here when we visit Scarborough, the kids love having their photo taken with Freddie, it's part of our Scarborough experience every time!

He's still gazing out to sea, at the view of the North Bay. If he wasn't already a bronze colour originally, he certainly would be by now, with layer after layer of rust, from the regular battering of wave after wave, which Marine Drive is notorious for.

I don't know who Freddie Gilroy is, but this is a great place to take a photo with the kids. My wife and mother-in-law took a great many photos here and of the coast and there is a decent cafe (Oasis) opposite.

This is what I found about it "'Freddie Gilroy and the Belsen Stragglers' is a giant steel structure made by Ray Lonsdale an artist fabricator and sculptor and is now on permanent display thanks to the generosity of a local Scarborough resident. The sculpture is based on a retired miner Ray became friends with who turned out to also be one of the first soldiers to relieve the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp at the end of World War II. This piece of art is not just about Freddie Gilroy but represents all the normal people that were pulled out of an ordinary life and forced into a very extraordinary and dangerous one during the World Wars. Ray Lonsdale sculptor from County Durham said: "Scarborough is a unique town and I am pleased that my 'Freddie Gilroy and the Belsen Stragglers' will be on show there for residents and visitors alike to look at and enjoy. This piece is almost a war memorial as it depicts the lives of all those who suffered during the World Wars". "I hope that people get enjoyment from my sculptures but also reflect on the sensitivity and emotion which I have tried to convey through my work." The sculpture is located near to the Oasis Cafe on Scarborough's North Bay. Ray also has 'High Tide in Short Wellies' sculpture on the beach front near the Coble Landing in Filey and an exhibition in the Arts Bank at Saltburn-by the-Sea ". Hope that helps.
