We stay at Dunster Beach each year and usually spend a day on the railway taking up a day rover ticket in the process.
Due to the weather this year we decided to skip our annual trip.
We did however walk along Dunster Beach into Blue Anchor, we had a lovely chat with the gentleman who I'm guessing was station master for the day and the lady who was weeding both were able to shows us pictures from the previous Sunday where the line was flooded at the station, thank you to these two lovely people for giving up their time in discussion, we enjoyed the chat so much we decided to take the train back to Dunster and enjoyed the travel that short distance, even for better our youngest dog had got over his fear of the big green monsters, thank you to all at the WSR for all you do especially the wonderful volunteers who give up so much time for free and to help maintain the traditions of our past

The WSR stations feature attractive floral displays.
Recognising inflation, the WSR keot fares stable in 2023. A good move despite how coal has risen in price.
I was priviliged to have a brief chat with the CEO. There are always challenges but the railway is supported by hundreds of selfless volunteers plus paid staff.
The variety of historic steam engines, diesels and even a railcar will keep little and big kids alike enthralled.
The line is scenic with Blue Anchor and Minehead being seaside. The latter has many restaurants and much accommodation.
The railway is easy to reach by Great Western Railway main line trains then Buses of Somerset route 28 from under the rail bridge at Taunton.
Special thanks to GWR for making a much loved 'Castle' HST railcar set available to run return trips on Sunday 24 September.
The WSR operates many special Santa trains in December so now is the time to book for an experience children will enjoy.

We’ve just had a wonderful week at Blue Anchor Hoburne caravan park in Somerset, with 2 dogs that this wonderful holiday company do not charge any extras for! This was one of the reasons we chose Hoburne for our well needed holiday as our rescue dogs are such a wonderful part of our family.
We decided to take a trip to Minehead on the Steam train, and checked dogs were allowed with a £3 fee each. We paid for 2 adults and 2 dogs, return tickets to Minehead, £26. We had a wonderful chat with a couple who volunteer to manage the steam railway, with other brilliant volunteers about the history of the railway and the chance on our return to look at the signal station. They absolutely love their involvement with the steam railway and the passengers they chat to every day.
The train was quite full as they’d had an unexpected coach party join the journey. The ticket inspector held the train door open to let us board and we asked “Can we sit in any coach?” She explained “You may need to walk through the carriages as they are quite full.”
As the journey began she asked to view our tickets. Pointing to our dogs, she said “Are these 2 greyhounds ?” I explained “We’ve got a greyhound and a whippet!” She then said “Do you know greyhounds are not allowed on the train!” I was speechless before I could reply saying “We’d checked the online site, the station staff had seen our dogs as we bought tickets and that she had actually held the train door open for us to board with the dogs! Surely that’s when she should have questioned us and explained!!!” In a loud voice she said ‘she’d been looking at the rules & regulations book recently and it had stated this.’ To say I was horrified is an understatement! She went on to explain her opinion for the reason “I think it’s because years ago they were known as aggressive racing dogs and may have been transported on trains. But I’m sure you’re ok as they look good!”
This made me feel so upset as passengers all around heard her comments and were looking at us. I know in recent news there have been so many awful dog attacks on children and adults. I felt passengers were really checking on us with worried looks and concern. I asked “Why hadn’t we been told this as we booked the tickets at the station?” and she smuggly said “They probably haven’t looked at all the rules!” We then went on to completely defend the gorgeous greyhound in every way as they are the most amazing, grateful pet that all they want is love, a home with their own bed or even better a settee after being forced to race. We take dog ownership seriously and safely. We wanted to do the right thing and asked her “‘Are we ok to return to Hoburne on the train as we will need to look into bus options when we get off?”
Her reply was “Don’t worry! I’m sure you’ll be fine!” Every time she passed us on the journey, she’d make another little comment, making us feel as we should be very grateful she’d let us continue the journey.
We were absolutes gutted about her comments in full view of lots of passengers. Her loud, authority tone of voice was not needed. I mean Greyhounds are quite big dogs that she couldn’t have missed, especially our gorgeous girl as she boarded the train infront of her!!!
I totally understand we all need to take dog ownership seriously and safely no matter what breed, which we have always done over many years. I also understand that rules are to be followed (although many need to be updated) and that passengers may have been made to feel very uncomfortable, particularly if you have no knowledge of greyhounds or have a fear of dogs.
But this ticket inspector totally ruined our steam train experience. We were so concerned we just couldn’t enjoy our visit to Minehead and decided to return on the earlier train in case of any problems. The relief to get off at Blue Anchor was wonderful!

This isn’t cheap, but it is well worth it. The staff were all so polite and welcoming. The trains are comfortable, the scenery is delightful, the stations are spotless and well maintained and (one area where others fall down) the trackside was well kept and not used as a dumping ground. Highly recommend.

The UK's longest standard gauge heritage railway, the West Somerset Railway (WSR) delivers stunning views of the Somerset countryside from the comfort of a restored railway carriage. Starting at Bishops Lydeard, the line runs between the Brendon and Quantock Hills, before opening up to reveal the Bristol Channel and the South Wales coastline. After passing through the historic harbour town of Watchet, the line goes onto Blue Anchor and Dunster, before arriving at the holiday destination town of Minehead, on the edge of Exmoor National Park.
This was my first visit to the WSR, and was highly impressed with the facilities offered at both Bishops Lydeard and Minehead. I visited the line a Wednesday, which is market day in Watchet, a took the opportunity to get off the train there and explore. the market is held on the Esplanade, overlooking the marina, and is well worth investigating if you have the opportunity.
Like most other heritage railways in the UK, the WSR is run predominantly by volunteers who have dedicated countless hours over many many years to renovating buildings, track, rolling stock and engines for future generations to enjoy. The result of this is an authentic Great Western Railway (GWR) branchline, using GWR locomotives. This is a must visit site for any railway enthusiast, particularly anyone with an interest in GWR history.
If I had any criticism of the line, it would be that the railway has been unable to fulfill its ambition of extending to Taunton due to external factors. It is my belief that such an expansion would be of benefit to users of railway, and this proposal should be looked at again by the relevant stakeholders

First class travel and event with this beautiful railway. It really was stunning, we went for the 1940s weekend and the whole ambience helped us step back in time.
We are 1940s re-enactment dancers from Devon and just loved the ability to dance on the platforms, mix with other like minded people and enjoy the romance of steam travel.
The staff were fantastic, from the tea ladies at Watchet to the dancing guard at Blue Anchor! Well done!

There is no discount on special services for disabled. Normally a carer goes free.
I see no OAP concession on the Web site.

I would like to know how much an adult & senior return train ticket from Williton to Watchet is, please.
The website is saying £30.00 for an adult ticket, that can't possibly be correct can it?

I think that’s the price for travelling on the whole line. It says on the website that you can buy tickets for intermediate stations on the day. You could always give them a call to clarify.

They run on a limited time table up to 31st October, there is a winter steam special over Christmas 4 days then they will open up around March next year, easiest thing is to check out their Web site for all timetables, costs special events etc

In December, what is the typical schedule for Festive Trains? Alternatively, when will the Festive Trains timetable be posted on WSR’s website? Is it feasible to make a day of it riding from Bishops Lydeard to Minehead and back during the shortened winter days? Especially if traveling from Bath.
