Fascinating tour of the house by Kath who brought the civil war to life and how important this house became to the survival of the monarchy. Interesting local anecdotes were woven into the story of Charles I’s dramatic escape to France and temporary exile.
Wish Kath had been my history teacher!
Beautiful gardens, wildflower meadow, shady woods and traditional orchard, plus NT’s usual delicious offerings in the tea-room. Just a perfect afternoon out.

Very disappointing visit to this National Trust Property
Was charged the full entry fee, and on viewing the house discovered only three rooms were open to the public on the ground floor. The upper two floors were closed including the Chapel which I had especially wanted to see. It was the Easter School Holiday and the place was busy with children, but nothing to view inside the house, and yet was charged the FULl entry price.

So glad we came here, after years of being a Nt member we always assumed it would be crap here!
However we’re wrong, yes it’s not huge, but the cafe is great. The gardens are beautiful. The mud kitchen for kids was amazing. So much fun had. The treehouse is unbelievable and our boy loved being there.
Great for young kids, flat and easy to get around.

A small but lovely NT property. The staff were really very friendly. There was lots going on for little ones- pumpkin carving and a bat trail. The cafe was serving food and drink in takeaway cups and bags only, but you were welcome to sit inside and eat/ drink.
We didn’t go into the house because my little one is too young, but it looked so interesting that I cannot wait to go back.

What a fabulous little gem! All the staff were so friendly and caring, and so understanding as my mum has forgot her hearing aids!
We had two children with us (4+6) and they wanted to carve pumpkins. They got to pick whichever they wanted and then we went to to cow shed to carve. It was so much fun. This was followed by a wooly bat hunt which was amazing! The handknitted bats were so cute, I wish we could have bought one to take home. The kids liked searching for the bats and discovering the tree house to climb.
We went into the house and was told a great deal by the staff about it's history, even the 6 year old was interested!
We finished our day off with a scone and a latte in the super cute cafe. Would 100% come back to visit.

Just off the M6 junction 10/11 or M54 junction 1, this is a real gem of a national trust house/garden to visit. Not too large and very family friendly.
Mud kitchen was a huge hit with the children - reminded me of my childhood games. The huge tree structure/house was also excellent.
Lovely grounds with pic-nic tables in various places.
Small cafe with indoor and outdoor tables.
Large 2nd hand book shop.
Lovely formal gardens.
We did not go in the house as we had small children with us but I would like to go again and explore some more.
Highly recommended.

I wanted to break a journey and this is the ideal place to spend a couple of hours. The house itself is small but very interesting with a special place in history. There’s original furniture and other items and each room has a volunteer able to bring the history to life, one that I caught delivered in an entertaining way that captivated a young audience. Parking is easy and the grounds looked particularly good this time of year. I didn’t have time to visit the cafe unfortunately.

A compact NT place, with our young family we easily spent three hours here on a cool autumn day. The Elizabethan house has a fascinating history, the enthusiastic guides flesh out the events described on the information panels. Outside there is amble space for a stroll through the woods & meadow to a superb treehouse.
