The Tourist Information Centre needs better signage, it took a while to locate.
The staff were very helpful and gave me suggestions S for local activities and transport.

We all have experienced dramatic situations over the past 18 months , and acknowledge how bad things have been, but the attitude and lack of customer care by some businesses does not help things , again staff shortages etc are stretching the owners of these businesses to the limit and I think everyone acknowledges that and are willing to accept that and appreciate the efforts that all businesses are making
However more communication and more tolerance would make things a lot better
I’m not going to name the places that fall below average as I think anyone who reads this review will know
But what I will say, with the same circumstances and same issues , the Crab Shell in Kingsbridge exceeded our expectations and with a clear sense of management and excellent communication skills and brilliant customer service, this is definitely a place to go

We met two members of staff debs and lindy while on holiday in salcombe . Debs in particular showed so much experience , knowledge and enthusiasm for the area that the information she gave us set our planning for the rest of the week . Our thanks to both of them for basically doing their jobs to an extremely high standard .

My husband entered the tourist office in Salcombe. There was only the female member of staff present who was not wearing a face covering. My husband has a disability that prevents him from wearing a face covering. Everywhere else we have been too have been very accomodating and helpful concerning this apart from here where the female member of staff shouted at my husband and told him to get out. He tried to explain but she would not listen and threatened to call the Police. My husband left feeling very upset. The Government website states the following
Exemption cards
If you have an age, health or disability reason for not wearing a face covering: you do not routinely need to show any written evidence of this you do not need show an exemption card
This means that you do not need to seek advice or request a letter from a medical professional about your reason for not wearing a face covering.
However, some people may feel more comfortable showing something that says they do not have to wear a face covering. This could be in the form of an exemption card, badge or even a home-made sign.
Carrying an exemption card or badge is a personal choice and is not required by law.
We contacted the tourist office with our concern about the discrimination of people with a disability by their staff and how upsetting this is for them but have failed to respond hence this review on TripAdvisor.

Firstly, let me start off by stating that this review does not refer to the actual Tourist Info Centre, which we did not visit, and it in no way reflects on them - it's just the nearest "best fit" that I can find for the town itself.
We visited Salcombe w/c 17/5 - not a great start as the park & ride was not running, with no replacement services on offer. We tried our usual road, which is always quiet and offers unrestricted parking. Not any more - very large swathes of it have now been marked off by double yellow lines - why? We asked a parking officer, who told us (rather gleefully) "I've been doing this job for 5 years and it was like it then." Not true - we were last there 3.5yrs ago and the double yellows were not there then. Of course, this means that even - at 9.30am - all the spaces left are pretty much taken.
To make it worse, the central car park in the town has also now been closed too. I get the centre is narrow, and does get congested, but why is the park & ride also out of action? Please don't say Covid!!
If you need further evidence of Salcombe's hostility towards tourists look no further than the toilets in the park grounds overlooking the river - Yes, you've guessed it, they're closed too!
If Salcombe wants to get the tourists back and the hospitality industry restarted, why does it make it so very difficult to visit and enjoy?
Try taking a look at your cousins in Dartmouth - no such problems there!

Salcombe seafood deli we had lobster crab scallops prawns mussels so fresh we loved the ward rooms too delicious coffee

We have been to Salcombe 12 times in 26 years. My Husband has been more than that with previous partners. I was amazed to read the comments by one visitor (Alice 344) The shops are lovely, not cheap, but Salcombe is not that kind of place. We have always found without exception everybody pleasant and very welcoming. It is not really suited to the skimpily dressed Kiss me Quick Hat brigade. Only a couple of shops selling buckets and spades etc., Brixham may suit some people better for arcades and similar. Salcombe is classy and I certainly hope it remains that way.
We are off to Salcombe next Monday 17th May, staying in The Salcombe Apartments and I am counting the days now. A wonderful little Town.

Salcombe is a pretty little town with cute shops & sandy beaches. Shame most of them are private and you aren't able to look at them, let alone get to them. The feel is decidedly unwelcoming and unfriendly. Seems they would rather you spend your money and leave quickly than really show you any kind of friendly spirit.

Like most people on holiday, we went to the TI for walking guides and general knowledge of the area. Bearing in mi d this was the first day of having to wear a face mask, the two staff couldn't have been more friendly to help us. Very easy going regarding the face coverings, really helpful regarding the walks and maps to buy. Will probably go back during this week but know its going to be a friendly welcome. Enjoy

Popped into the Salcombe Tourist Information office this weekend to find out answers to a few questions I had. The ladies on duty were so friendly and helpful it was a pleasure to pop in. Go say hello!

Hi where comeing on holiday here and was wondering which beach would be the best to go to?As they all look absolutely stunning its hard to choose thank you.
Hi Rachel.
You are right; they are all great beaches.
North Sands beach is known predominantly as a wet sand beach. South Sands beach is great; with a hotel next to it.
For me; the jewel in the crown is Mill Bay beach in East Portlemouth. Just a five minute ferry ride, from the Ferry Inn pub to the jetty at Mill Bay beach. You have two choices here, either to your left, a long beach, with a cafe' situated at the ferry landing. Or, to the right which takes you to the Mill Bay beach proper, this to me is the best one. There are no catering facilities there, and no BBQ's allowed, so ensure to take provisions etc.
All the beaches are safe for children and clean.
