This historic park is a haven for wildlife that is easily accessible and wheelchair friendly. The circuit around the lake is very even. There is a raised platform area overlooking some bird feeders that are well-frequented by a variety of tits and finches. The lake itself hosts waterfowl including Mandarin Ducks and Goosander. The car parking fee is reasonable.

Stover was a beautiful place for a walk but sadly in the name of conservation they have felled swathes of trees, over worked the grounds and ruined the natural beauty for hundreds of years. It has been completely ‘over embellished’ with tacky installations for children which are totally unnecessary as they should just be out enjoying nature as one did in the good old days. Increased car parking will mean the park is over used which then defeats the purpose of going for a nice country walk. I can’t believe this has been allowed. Leave nature as it is and stop wasting the money you have been given. Won’t be going there again despite it being one of my favoured walk for years.

Broke our journey to Paignton with a smashing stopover at Stover country park . Nominal parking charges apply, well worth a visit to stretch the legs and enjoy nature within the lake and park area. Saw great crested grebes , tufted ducks & herons.

I really want to say it’s great, because it is, it’s a rare part of the countryside I can access because the path around really is wheelchair accessible however you can’t pay to park independently which makes it a very stressful start, the ticket machine is not wheelchair accessible you can’t reach the slot to put money in and get a ticket so when I go on my own I have to sit and wait until the next person comes to pay for their parking and ask them to do mine, which is fine unless I go during a quiet time when I have waited over 20 minutes for someone else to park. It’s amazing it’s a wheelchair accessible walk and it really is, I use a manual active user chair, I do attach a free wheel and I would reccomend because some areas your front castors would stick, but it’s an easy 2 mile wheel around with only a few uphill sections but easily done alone in a manual wheelchair. But the parking is a huge problem they need an accessible pay machine, and not many disabled parking bays so can be hit and miss if you can park.

Once upon a time this was a country house estate, it's now a nature reserve (the house is now a school and not open to the public). Swans, ducks, coots on the lake. Squirrels in the trees. All sorts of stuff. They have a Ted Hughes poetry trail as well - I didn't see the connection but I presume he was local
I liked the aerial walkway - although it's level, the ground falls away sharply leaving you at treetop level suddenly. Wander round the lake, take a picnic and sit at one of the many picnic tables in the woods
We wandered up to the WWI Canadian lumberjack memorial (they came over to cut down trees for the trenches). It's a bit of a trek, and I think with hindsight I would have preferred to spend more time at the lake
Nice mobile cafe outside the visitor centre. I'll do a separate review - see Fuelled by Caffeine

Hello, we are looking to hold our annual family picnic at your park, on the 30th June this year, is there a suitable spot for us to set up a few tables and chairs, close to the car park? Many thanks, Kate.

Hi - there are several places for chairs and tables to be set up for a picnic. We have several picnic tables and seats near the visitor centre and around the lake path. There a nice clearing to the right of the visitor centre. If you need advice on the day - just pop into the visitor centre :-)

Sorry, there is no formal play area. There are various things to do like feeding the ducks, walking along the aerial walkway, watching wildlife from the bird hide and playing woods.

We visited recently with my powerchair which just managed the route around the lake. We saw someone using a hired scooter & wondered how we could hire one to go on the longer routes & also how much does it cost.

Morning - The Tramper here is part of a scheme run by Countryside Mobility South West, which has a great website listing all countryside sites with trampers. To join the scheme costs £10 annually which covers training and insurance while using it. There is a £2.50 temporary membership which covers two weeks for visitors on holiday or would like to try using it once. Stover has a £2.50 hour hire for each time its used. You can join on site and its straight forward and takes about 20 minutes. If you call the Rangers Office on 01626 835236, we will be a happy to advise an answer any questions..

Are there any admission charges to the nature reserve?

No there is no admission charge but you do have to pay for parking
We are looking forward to visiting the park soon and are hoping to bbq's for lunch in the picnic area. I couldn't find any information regarding whether this is allowed when looking through the website. Would you clarify this for me please? I use a portable gas unit but I am sure others reading this will also be interested in using charcoal bbq's. Thanks.

Is Stover Country Park dog friendly? If you do allow dogs are they restricted to certain areas and can they be let off their lead or do they need to be kept on a lead?
Kind regards,
Sarah

Hi Sarah,
Yes Stover Country Park is dog friendly and is popular with dog walkers.
We ask that dogs be kept out of the lake, and under control (either on a lead or walking to heel).
The bird nesting season is almost upon us so there will additional signs to help prevent disturbance to the wildfowl as they begin to nest.
If you need any advice please contact the Rangers at the visitor centre or call us on 01626 835236

Hi there,
I just wondered on the off chance, do you provide such activities as a gruffalo hunt, or a spot the insect/ collect a stick, find the oak tree sheet or anything to keep little minds active?
Obviously when we visit next we plan to do such a thing, with our own ideas ( if that's ok?)
But wasn't sure if a nature adventure was available by yourselves at all?
Regards
Mrs P

Thank you for your message.
We do have small range of ‘spotter sheets’ available in the Ranger’s office. They consist of birds, animals, insects and tree leaves. There is also a brass rubbings trail - we provide a map to locate 12 wooden posts with animal brass plates attached, which with paper and crayons, can be drawn over and collected.
There is a small charge of 10p for the spotter sheets and 30p for the brass rubbings trail as we provide the paper and crayons.
If you have any further questions please let us know. The Rangers office telephone number is 01626 835236 or email stover@devon.gov.uk.
Hope this information is useful.
Many thanks,
Jon

I am wanting to visit and bring my young children for a bike ride (we have a trailer too) Is it suitable for leisurely bike rides? Or are they not permitted or uneven surfaces etc? Thank you

Morning Hayley,
Thanks for enquiry. We have a designated cycle route through the park which is tarmacked. It can be found near the main car park. It leads to the Stover Trail which is off road and runs north to Bovey Tracey and south to Newton Abbot. This route is also tarmacked and signposted.
There is no cycling around the Lake or other areas of the park .
Hope this information is useful - please let us know if you have any further questions.
