Although visiting at the end of October, the garden is still really beautiful. I can well believe that in a few years it will be up there with Nymans and Sissinghurst. Lovely atmosphere. I very much enjoyed a guided walk led by Clive and chatting with some of the volunteer gardeners. Will definitely try to return to Durham and visit Crook Hsll in June.

We visited Crook House during a day trip to Durham. The website looked good and the ladies on reception were very helpful when we arrived. Due to some work in relaying paths the maze was closed and we accessed the gardens via the hall. There was a forest bark path around the gardens which if I am honest we're smaller than expected and a little underwhelming. It was quite peaceful and there were some people sat enjoying the quiet but I was expecting a bit more from a garden display although I accept it was September.
I was also expecting a bit more from the hall which felt to me like a Manor house with only one large room and a galley. We went round everything quite quickly which was a little disappointing. Maybe on a glorious summers day I would have spent longer in the gardens but overall it's was good but not great

I visited when I was in the area during the last week of September. I did not expect to see the garden at its best, but it had enough potential for me to make a mental note to visit again if in the area in spring or summer.
Some parts of the gardens were inaccessible due to work being carried out (particularly on paths). At this time of year the kitchen garden was most worthy of attention.
The main attraction in the Hall is the Minstrel Gallery.
Allowance has to be made for the fact that the National Trust has only owned this estate for a few years and there are therefore multiple development works in progress which in time will enhance the visitor experience.
It is only a short walk from Durham city centre via a pedestrian bridge over the river.
It is likely that a future visit will lead to a higher rating.

We haven't been here for a couple of years and weren't sure what to expect in late September. We weren't disappointed. There is a lot of colour still in many of the beds and the vegetable patches are full of produce. This is a delightful garden which can be seen in under an hour. There is plenty of parking but it is only a short walk from the town centre along the river. Afternoon our look around we had a very nice soup and cheese scone in the cafe.

We visited on the Heritage weekend. Volunteers were very friendly and explained the place well.
It was bigger than I had imagined with plenty of very well kept and colourful gardens. I wasn’t expecting them to be as fantastic in September!
Our highlight was the allotment part where we enjoyed seeing the grapes on the vines as well as various other veg.
The wellbeing garden with small potting shed is beautiful and so very peaceful with a view of Durham Cathedral. Could have sat there for ages!
There was also a lovely cosy second hand book shop.
Thoroughly enjoyed our visit and the cafe looked nice too.

Warning: This is a weed patch! This garden sets the bar for the worst garden, public or private, I have ever seen. The experience was a total waste of time and money. This review comes from a Master Gardner in the U.S. who has organized annual garden tours for almost a decade.

We went on the national trust day and the gardens were beautiful...lots of wonderful places to take photos which is my hobby. Stopped in the cafe for cream scones and lattes... faultless.

Crook Hall & Gardens is a National Trust property. I was expecting it to be a bit bigger but it was all very nice. At the entrance is a maze. There’s also a medieval house with a minstrels gallery with views in the distance to Durham Cathedral, and a used book shop in the house. There were several different garden areas to see including a walled garden, pond and a vegetable garden, and some others. Lovely setting for a picnic and plenty of seats for those who needed a rest but also a cafe, although we didn’t go in. It was a lovely way to spend an hour in a countryside setting, although just a 10-15 minute walk into Durham City centre.

Fab. Lovely gardens. National trust looked after. Cafe. Second hand book shop (proper discounted price). Free parking for national trust members too, which was lovely.

Crook Hall and Gardens is a relatively recent addition to the NT but what a gem it is.
We spent a very pleasant hour wandering around the series of gardens, all different in style, which felt like walking though a series of different rooms. The green and white garden was my favourite. There's even a maze. A compact NT site but very enjoyable.

Photography can be taken in the house, the visit should take a couple of hours, it's worth going on a dry day to make the most of the wonderful gardens

The ploughman's afternoon tea replaces the sandwiches with pork pie, cheese & crackers plus scotch egg, the cakes and scones are the same as the standard afternoon tea. Your also are given the option to have a bottled Durham brewery beer in place of the normal Prosecco. Hope this helps.
