Well worth a visit. You can catch a bus from Durham to get to the garden. Small cafe and patio which Was full of different geraniums. Good views down into garden and small pond. We wandered around the greenhouses and the upper garden. It's a very large site.
Enjoyed scones and coffee as well. The garden is on two foe one offer, with Gardeners World card.

Got there to find it closed no signs to say it would be closed not on website or on the road leading to it not even in the car park

Due to a private event being held in the Botanic Garden on Wednesday 19 June. We were advised on health and safety grounds for our visitors that there must be operational adjustments for visitor experience when visiting the garden.
We apologise for any inconvenience caused.
The Botanic Garden is now fully operational again and we would love to see you visit.

Great place. Well worth a visit. Especially liked the water garden, bamboo grove, cacti greenhouse and rain forest. Nice café with very welcoming staff. Highly recommended.

Our water garden, bamboo grove, cacti greenhouse and the rain forest are all great features of the garden this time of year.
We would love to see you visit again later in the year to see other features of our garden bloom.

Beautiful place and lots of outdoor tables to picnic or have something from the café.
DREADFUL cheese scone. Large and good texture but no cheese flavour. Was given a second one but just as bad.
For £2.75 I think more cheese and more flavour (perhaps slightly smaller scone) could be included.

This place just seems very neglected. Weeds and dead plants everywhere including cacti in the glasshouse and derelict trial beds.
There was a sign somewhere saying that they're on with improvements but the only thing we could see was about 30 yards of new "stone" setted paving which looked ridiculously out of place anyway. The fountain/pond/rill was half-empty so didn't work properly.
Not worth paying to get in for sure.

Well maintained and pleasant garden with a variety of trails, greenhouses etc.
Pleasant cafe/tearoom with plenty of seating indoors and out.
Worth a visit if you’re in Durham.

Walked here from our hotel which was mostly uphill so quite a trek .. the gardens themselves were beautiful with quite a few floral displays etc ..because of the time of year there were a lot of flowers/plants not grown or out so would probably be good to go later in the year to see it at its best but we thoroughly enjoyed it regardless … there was some nice sculptures scattered around and a man doing woodcraft making bowls etc in the grounds the old fashioned way that you could buy ..it was a bit confusing on the way in though and we didn’t know where to pay so just walked in as there was no one there to stop us .. when we finished walking round we visited the cafe and asked .. we told her we had already walked round but needed to pay but wasnt sure where … she said it was fine and we could pay now .. we had a lovely coffee sat inside as it was raining but there was plenty of seating outside in the flower garden.. there’s also lots of woodland to walk through with wildlife if that’s your thing .

As you attended on a weekend, there will have been no gardeners on site that day, however it may have been that the catering team were preparing food when you arrived into the Visitor Centre.
Furthermore, we currently have works taking place on the Visitor Centre roof which has effected the entrance points to the Botanic Garden. The works are due to complete by the end of May.
We are pleased to hear you got involved with our Green Woodworking event.
We would love to see you visit the garden later this year to see the flowering throughout the different seasons.

A lovely spot for a leisurely walk. Plants and trees are beautiful. Lots of places to sit and relax. Great little cafe with good coffee and the freshest tuna and salad sandwich. Thank you!

I visited here years ago, but couldn't really remember much about it. Enjoyed a day with family and the little cafe was lovely, too.

My wife and I love visiting the Botanical Gardens. There is something different to see all through the seasons. It is so peaceful, and may I add, civilised!! Absolutely great for a single person, couples and children. There is so much to learn from the information provided and you can spend as much time there as you like. The nature aspect is wonderful with a bird hide giving you the opportunity to spot all types of birds as well as the squirrels. We don't normally frequent cafes, preferring to sit on a rock with a flask, however we do like completing our visit with a cuppa in the on site cafe. One of the main reasons for this is because of Leanne and her colleague. Such lovely friendly girls, always ready to have a chat and a good laugh!! A pleasure and full credit to them. Thank you, Joni and Brian.

Unfortunately, there is a policy of no dogs in the garden, however assistance dogs are welcome and dog bowls can be obtained from the café.
