Nice site. Peaceful and great walks
2021年5月 • 好友
Lovely site. Nice and small. We parked right in front of Abbey with the Motorhome. Drive down the Lane can be a bit tight if someone is coming the other way. But access is easy enough.
Site shop is lovely. Coffee is also good if you can’t be bothered doing it yourself. First trip out of lockdown and was so nice to be on a lovely site.
The walks from the site are amazing. Walk up stream for miles. Dog friendly site and dog friendly walks.

Disappointed.

Visited Finchale Priory for the first time today. I would NOT visit again. As an English Heritage member I am used to free car parking when I visit membership sites. You drive through an automatic barrier when entering the car park, but it is only once you have entered that you see the sign saying you need a token to leave. That costs £3 and you have a maximum stay of 2 hours.
The Priory itself is very impressive, however, there are no information boards explaining the history, what you can see or artists impressions of the sites so that you can picture the priory in its heyday. E.g ,the sort of thing you find all over Hadrian's Wall sites.
There appears to be no English Heritage staff at the site or office/shop were you can buy guide books, souvenirs etc.
All in all a disappointing visit.

Superb Abbey but rest of it a shambles.
2021年8月 • 夫妻情侣
We were visiting Finchale Abbey so this was very confusing! Have visited smaller English Heritage sites where we have paid an admission which I would have happily paid to visit this site, (even though we are now members of English Heritage)The Abbey itself is stunning in outstanding condition one of the best we have seen,  lots of little nooks and crannys to explore. On a beautiful setting beside the river and nice woodland to walk through. As others have said in most EH sites there are lots of information boards around explaining the history of the site and the layout. That would be my only complaint of the Abbey itself that there is very little information no boards etc

We hadn't realised however EH don't have anything to do with the surrounding land we found out to our cost, the shop, picnic area, toilets, car park etc belong to the caravan site.
On entering site there are barriers to let you in and out no mention there about car parking  charges. The barriers open freely to let you in. As you enter the car park, (grassed area) there is a sign saying 2 hr car parking max but again no mention of payment. However on leaving at the barriers it says token needed, we had seen a sign as we were driving out about a token but thought that was to do with the caravan site. We reversed and went to the shop ( window in the wall) and asked about the token I was told abruptly it was £3 and there were plenty of signs about ( I only saw 1)
There was a sign saying cards accepted minimum spend £5 but she willing took my £3 card payment as I had no cash!! What if I had no card with me?
There were 2 toilets of which one was locked up, with an honesty box 20p charge, didn't have any cash unfortunately so had a Freebie, its in the middle of nowhere so not sure where else they expect you to go!
We also saw signs for a bbq/ picnic field thinking there would be picnic benches we started a uphill  200m walk to an empty field not a bench or seat in sight, why advertise an area if there are no facilities! Very unfriendly unorganised unproffessional and shambolic. I certainly wouldn't recommend staying there if that was first impressions.
I would only return there if English Heritage ran the site in the professional way the do their others.

Worth a visit

Great spot to experience abbey ruins and enjoy a peaceful walk along the river. Signage fir parking could be a bit clearer but on the whole we enjoyed our visit.

More signage required
2021年7月
Not far from Durham, it is an English Heritage site but on private land so expect to pay an exit fee etc. There are next to no info boards around the priory ittself, which do help identify rooms, activities etc, this would improve the experience.

A weird experience
2021年6月 • 夫妻情侣
I lived near to Finchale Abbey 30 years ago so I was looking forward to a return visit on a recent trip to Durham. The Abbey and setting by the river are as lovely as I recall. We are EH members but nonetheless the Abbey is open to all free of charge. (Bar the exit fee unless you walk in via the prison road or over the bridge which is a public bridleway and as has been stated by others this PROW clearly upsets the owners. How dare they enter our land without paying!; The not so good therefore are the hawks who lay ownership and riperian rights to this beautiful part of what nature created right next to a publically funded historic monument. The guy claiming the fee to pay for your exit. (He never did say he would let me out if I didn't pay. !!) sits behind a weird port hole window with all the charm of a well known Jack Nicholson scene. A " shining"example of humanity he appears not. The overall impression is one of opportunistic greed all gained on the back of a national monument and beautiful formation of nature.
Some things I guess are better left in one's memory.

Absolutely fantastic place, lots of people enjoying themselves, only thing was the litter left onsite and no signs about telling you what was what but that’s what google is for to give me an idea.
