This is a delightful spot nestling in a curve of the River Wear. We were blessed with beautiful Autumn sunshine that showed off the ruins perfectly.. Althouigh this is an English Heritage site the usual guidebook is not available. However we were able to find our way around.
Just 15 minutes from the centre of Durham and often overlooked but well worth a visit.

First off we were dismayed to find barriers in place at this so called "free" site and with very little room to turn and a campervan approching I pushed my motorbike in to the side and the wife pushed hers to the opposite side of the road to allow the van to pass. Shortly thereafter two men in a golf cart approached the barrier, one of which was rather aggressive and started shouting that we couldn't park and to "bloody well move" (double yellows on private road, totally unenforceable) "we were idiots", "our motorcycles would be smashed up", "pee off back to skanky Scotland" the other made rude remarks to my wife implying she was a man and called her a fat b and then the first man told her "act like a man and you'll get decked like a man" because she stood her ground.
Seriously can't make this stuff up, absolutely disgusting behaviour from whoever these men were. I noticed other reviews stating they had been approached in a similar manner, so not an isolated incident.

Beautiful setting and ruins but no interpretation at all. What are EH doing here? I (unwillingly) spent £5 on a non EH guidebook which was extremely eccentric, to say the least.
I also feel cheated to have to pay £3 to park.
From reading previous reviews, I can only assume there is bad blood between EH and the owners of the surrounding land.

Tried to just walk around this lovely scenic area not knowing that it was closed - once we realised we Thought we could take the public footpath through the area towards Durham at which point we were yelled and screamed at by the owners of the land. They stated that this was not open to the public and we would have to leave immediately. several people were around the area and also experienced these horrendous insults and landowners. As we were leaving the owners starting throwing insults and threatening violence stating signs were stated everywhere. Make sure you go in opening hours if you want to NOT fear for your life.

The Priory is in an idyllic setting, but the experience of visiting is ruined by two things.
Firstly the atmosphere is completely spoilt by the extremely unfriendly notices which have been placed by the private landowners around the site.
Secondly, English Heritage have not provided any information or interpretation boards about the Priory.

Lovely site. Nice and small. We parked right in front of Abbey with the Motorhome. Drive down the Lane can be a bit tight if someone is coming the other way. But access is easy enough.
Site shop is lovely. Coffee is also good if you can’t be bothered doing it yourself. First trip out of lockdown and was so nice to be on a lovely site.
The walks from the site are amazing. Walk up stream for miles. Dog friendly site and dog friendly walks.

Visited Finchale Priory for the first time today. I would NOT visit again. As an English Heritage member I am used to free car parking when I visit membership sites. You drive through an automatic barrier when entering the car park, but it is only once you have entered that you see the sign saying you need a token to leave. That costs £3 and you have a maximum stay of 2 hours.
The Priory itself is very impressive, however, there are no information boards explaining the history, what you can see or artists impressions of the sites so that you can picture the priory in its heyday. E.g ,the sort of thing you find all over Hadrian's Wall sites.
There appears to be no English Heritage staff at the site or office/shop were you can buy guide books, souvenirs etc.
All in all a disappointing visit.

We were visiting Finchale Abbey so this was very confusing! Have visited smaller English Heritage sites where we have paid an admission which I would have happily paid to visit this site, (even though we are now members of English Heritage)The Abbey itself is stunning in outstanding condition one of the best we have seen, lots of little nooks and crannys to explore. On a beautiful setting beside the river and nice woodland to walk through. As others have said in most EH sites there are lots of information boards around explaining the history of the site and the layout. That would be my only complaint of the Abbey itself that there is very little information no boards etc
We hadn't realised however EH don't have anything to do with the surrounding land we found out to our cost, the shop, picnic area, toilets, car park etc belong to the caravan site.
On entering site there are barriers to let you in and out no mention there about car parking charges. The barriers open freely to let you in. As you enter the car park, (grassed area) there is a sign saying 2 hr car parking max but again no mention of payment. However on leaving at the barriers it says token needed, we had seen a sign as we were driving out about a token but thought that was to do with the caravan site. We reversed and went to the shop ( window in the wall) and asked about the token I was told abruptly it was £3 and there were plenty of signs about ( I only saw 1)
There was a sign saying cards accepted minimum spend £5 but she willing took my £3 card payment as I had no cash!! What if I had no card with me?
There were 2 toilets of which one was locked up, with an honesty box 20p charge, didn't have any cash unfortunately so had a Freebie, its in the middle of nowhere so not sure where else they expect you to go!
We also saw signs for a bbq/ picnic field thinking there would be picnic benches we started a uphill 200m walk to an empty field not a bench or seat in sight, why advertise an area if there are no facilities! Very unfriendly unorganised unproffessional and shambolic. I certainly wouldn't recommend staying there if that was first impressions.
I would only return there if English Heritage ran the site in the professional way the do their others.

Is there a walking path to reach the Priory from Durham? We’d like to walk there, but not if it means walking along a busy road with no pavement.

We took a buggy and struggled with that! Depends on the disability. If wheelchair bound I would say no as there is a lot of stones to clamber over etc

around the car park area is all flat with good roads and 2 inclines the Priory is not suitable for wheel chair access. You can enjoy the beautiful views over looking the river and watching the local wild life

We do serve food mainly snacks toaties hot dogs scones and most want to sit out side
In the winter people use the cafe more when we have the log fire on

Tony, I'm afraid your nearest Bus Stop to Finchale Priory Touring Park would mean a minimum of 35 minutes (walking fairly briskly) to the stop on Finchale Avenue, close to HMP Frankland.
The service is run by Arriva North East, number 62 which takes 15mins to reach Durham City centre. Timetables can be found here: arrivabus, north-east
As for Cycling to Durham, there is a Blog on the constructioncode blogspot, ref: finchale-priory-to-durham-fantastic
This is from 2013, but I am sure it is still relevant.
Might I point out that the park where you are booked has these (and more up to date) details available upon request. Not a criticism, simply added information.
Speaking of which, might I suggest the following for details of local transport for anywhere in the UK:
