Plenty to see and read if you are inclined although only small exhibitions. The World Heritage section and the visitor centre and museum are all in one building now so you can dip into a bit of each if you like. All free to enter and look at.
No rush or obligation, but help available if you wanted it, which was nice.

A small but varied exhibition of military, literary, and archaeological artefacts is on show here, all based on Durham’s rich historical significance. I enjoyed looking at all the collections and although I was on my own, young children and their families were having a good time too with the archaeological activity set up. (NB not digging!) it was interesting to learn the history of the Durham regiment and the valour of the soldiers which goes back even further than the Crimean War. It’s free to go in, so all the more reason to pay a visit. Staff are lovely.

With very helpful staff on duty when we visited, we found this visitor centre to be smart, modern and interesting. As well as lots of very good information boards about the origins and growth of the city, and the various tourist attractions to explore, the staff were able to give general information about what to see and do in the area.

My twin brother Stephen and I were heading to Palace Green and passed the Durham World Heritage Site Visitor Centre, although closed when we were here I must say I was so impressed with the building that houses the visitor centre.
Constructed in the 1830's from medieval stone,its such an iconic structure, one thing I noticed was that the building has no chimneys, found out later that is because the building was built in an exposed position and thus wind erosion has damaged the chimneys which were removed, its a wonderful looking building, most definitely well worth checking out if you're in the area and easy to locate on Palace Green.

Interesting exhibits and films giving us a potted history of Durham. As we are from Northumberland not far from Lindisfarne it was of local interest as well.

We had never been to Durham before so loved this centre as it sets the scene for visitors. The ladies in there were very friendly and helpful nothing too much trouble. Information boards up to date and helpful. Well worth a visit.

The Heritage Center is a great source of information as well as where you purchase your tickets to visit the castle.
Entry to the Heritage Center is free of charge, you can pick up handy street maps and brochures as well as purchasing the usual gifts, mugs, coasters, etc etc.
