Although "jama" means a cave, Gruska jama is actually a pocket valley with a spring of the Gruska creek and another small cave. It is located right at the road between Prelasko and Kozje. Whichever direction you arrive from, you should notice a bus stop with a clearly visible inscription "Gruska jama" at both sides of the road. Behind the eastern stop (i.e. the one serving buses from Kozje towards Prelasko and Podčetrtek) there is a small rest area with a possibility to park. This rest area with some information panels is actually a starting point to Gruska jama.
Actually it is possible to make a round trip to the valley. The southern leg uses moderately steep ruts and is suitable to most visitors. To take it, walk along the main road towards Kozje, after a few meters turn left to a rut. While walking this rut, be careful on your left side not to miss a small column with an arrow sign pointing left. If you follow it, you'll eventually reach a small foot bridge where the official trail actually starts. From here it is easy to access the spring right under a 30 meter high rock. The scenery might be very impressive during wetter periods when the spring may become a waterfall.
It is possible to return using the northern leg but it is much more difficult. It is indeed well maintained and protected by fences but almost the entire section you'll have to walk on very steep and very narrow stairs where meeting and avoiding visitors from the opposite direction is indeed complicated. As such it is really not recommended to anyone suffering from acrophobia or whose ankles/knees/etc. do not permit walking on such steep stairs. At some point, there is a short dead-end branch to the Hermit's Cave ("Puščavnikova jama"),a small cave where a hermit indeed lived during a period between both world wars. The path to this cave is short but very narrow and carved into a vertical wall.
