We’d set Apple Maps but the app does not (March 23) take you to the museum, however the car park it did take us to (Exchange Street) was ideal for us. However, whilst trying to get our bearings we ran into Dan, one of the museum’s staff members who happened to be on route and he gave us the most informative overview of the museum and Paradise Mill whilst he guided us there (a 3 minute walk).
A lovely welcome from those on duty and a guided-tour-inclusive drink whilst we waited for our guided tour. The guided tour was £11.50 with a small concessions reduction for my wife. It was led by Tim. Dan had already warmed us up to the fact that Tim was a local social history buff and had bigger-up Tim’s guided tour of Paradise Mill (adjacent the Silk Museum). Dan was not wrong! There were only four of us on the tour that morning, and it was worth every penny. We came away with a real understanding of the wider Cheshire silk trade, its links to London and other social influences. The mill is fascinating, though not accessible to those with mobility issues as far as we could tell.
The museum and mill have links to the MMU and degree-level textile students are using its resources.
The museum itself (free entry, small donations encouraged) is fascinating and appears to be fully accessible.
I’d thoroughly recommend, but (for summer 2023) check in advance re: access to Paradise Mill, as there are some vital roofworks planned which may lead to a short closure period.

The museum is excellent and Paradise Mill is unique with its original silk looms. The tour by Dan was superb. Informative & fascinating tales of the machines and the people who worked there. Highly recommended for anyone with an interest in industrial history and the skills of the people who worked in these places.

Tour of Paradise Mill highly recommended (only accessible via steps unfortunately). Daisy gave us a great tour of the mill including lots of interesting social history of Macclesfield aka Women's town ;-)

This is a hidden gem in the Macclesfield community. Our tour of Paradise Mill was absolutely excellent with the wonderful Daisy bringing the and industry and the social conditions of that era to life. The sheer genius of the designers, the fascinating silk weaving process, the utter heart wrenching working conditions of the workers (including children). Absolutely fascinating tour. Just be mindful there are 49 steps up to the mill floor. Lovely museum, shop and café. Very well worth a visit

Fantastic experience and highly recommended! Both the Museum and the Mill
Very friendly and knowledgeable staff, great displays and fascinating information about Macclesfield silk mill(s) - learnt a lot and enjoyed it all!
Although the museum is fantastic on its own, it only really makes sense when you see the old mill exactly the way it looked when it was still working, in the same spot! History all around...

What a gem. We were lucky enough to have Dan as our guide who was so knowledgeable and enthusiastic. His love of the Mill shone through and we learned so much from him. Thank you Dan. If time had permitted I could have stayed much longer.
Our time in the museum was also fascinating and was finished off with very welcome tea/coffee and cake.

Allow plenty of time for the tour and to look around the museum as there is so much to see. Our tour guide was delightful, very knowledgeable and read her audience well. An excellent museum with a lovely, friendly team of volunteers and staff.

We visited Paradise Mill whilst on holiday near Macclesfield and had booked the guided tour.
Our guide Dan was excellent and so enthusiastic !
The tour was just over an hour and was so interesting and informative and all aspects were brought alive by Dan.
I would highly recommend this unusual and totally absorbing tour which charts the very interesting history of silk production in Macclesfield.

What a gem of a find. We didn't expect to see much at the museum as we just thought it would be a couple of rooms with pictures etc. How wrong were we, excellent presentations of the history of the Silk industry in the area. We would definitely recommend a visit.

Very much enjoyed our visit to both the museum and the Mill. The tour guide was enthusiastic and very knowledgeable. There is an awful lot to see in a quite small space so give yourself plenty time. We could only spare an hour in the museum and it was not enough. We will need to go back!!

Is there parking at the museum
Hi Jill, there is free 1 hour street parking right outside the museum. If you would like to stay longer there is a pay for council run carpark on the corner of Park lane - outside Wetherspoons pub.
