I came especially to see the Knife Angel which is on its tour around UK. Last place was Taunton and now it's in Weston-super-Mare for one month, then on to Sunderland. Tour finishes in Bristol in December/January. Knife Angel is a very moving piece of sculpture, made of thousands of knives which have been handed in over the last few months/years. It's a symbol against knife crime, hoping to reduce it, making a statement. Ribbons tied on the fence by people affected by knife crime. A marvellous piece of artwork. Go and see it! Apparently it's lit up at night! This I have yet to see!

The Italian Gardens is a useful asset for Weston and should be used more often, the Eat Food Festivals here are always enjoyable events.
Recently I spent a Sunday afternoon enjoying the Sea Shanty and Folk Festival where the main stage was in the Italian Gardens, a very enjoyable experience.

just a large expance of concrete now..sad..not worth going out of your way to visit here..unless you only want to sit and watch the pigeons

We used to come here when I was a kid. Don't love the renovation. much more minimalist and utilitarian. And, if anyone is using a sound system, it echoes horribly.

came here for the sea shanty festival - get acoustics, but not a lot of seating opportunity...nice little square should be used more

We didn't fancy going into the crowded bars and backrooms of Weston to listen to the folk music, so we avoided those, which was a shames as some of our friends were in the various folk groups. So instead we sat outside in the Italian Gardens and listened to the Wurzel-type folk music. All very jolly and there were lots of people there.

A fine sunny spring day, and the Eat Weston food festival shows just how useful this space can become.
There were food and drink producers from Somerset, Devon and surrounding areas, the stalls well spaced out so for the most part customers could move freely with reasonable social distancing. There was also a selection of street food available.
Hopefully the council can attract more similar events like this which bring people into the town centre.
These Eat festivals are well worth searching out around Somerset and beyond.

Such lovely early spring weather meant there were quite a few people (and skateboarders!) in the Italian Gardens today, mostly keeping the safe distancing measures. It did look nice in the sunshine, unlike in grey winter days when it appears featureless and grim. I enjoyed my walk and admired the beautifully kept water feature complete with working waterfall next to the Winter Gardens building.

In spite of the drizzle, I walked here on my daily constitutional. There were quite a few other people there, too, sitting on the few benches in the rain! I guess they're so desperate to get out of the house and meet friends that they don't mind getting a bit wet. Lots of pigeons there too, scrabbling around for food, poor things. But apart from all that, these so-called Italian Gardens (or the Town Square as people tend to call it) is a featureless, flat place, missing all its previous trees and bushes which were demolished to make way for the expensive slabs of concrete. It's all very disappointing but still it's somewhere to go to escape the Second Lockdown and meetup with friends - even in the rain and at a distance!

Monday 21st September and we walked across the paved area in the centre of Weston Super Mare.
A large paved area surrounded by lawn areas with curved walls and concrete balustrades around the place. Plenty of benches to sit and watch the world go by
In one section there were grilles in pavings
which were part of a water fountain that shoot water skyward, when operational. It was not working when we were here.
We walked across the Gardens to get to Sovereign Shopping Centre.
We did not see any evidence of any flowers around the gardens, perhaps none were planted due to COVID 19 restrictions and lockdown.
There were floodlights around the plaza which indicate that events are held here.
Sadly the gardens did look and a bit neglected, perhaps a sign of the times.
