Beautiful building, content of play may need to be considered in future.

Flashback to 1970/80: gollywogs, black dolls with extreme features; golf ball eyes, massive lips, skin colour like burnt oak, limp straggly hair (may have been from the 80’s), lips like Botox that has gone wrong…

Now, back to reality, fast forward to 2023; Setting, Richmond Theatre, production, ‘Quality Street’, where puppets were used to depict children. One was supposedly representing a black child.
Description: golf ball eyes, massive lips, skin colour like burnt oak, limp straggly hair, lips like Botox that has gone wrong…

Notice any difference? EXACTLY! And this is 2023!

I was totally offended by what I had seen. I can’t even say the production was enjoyable, I read that it had mixed reviews. Could the producer not see that the props that were used (in this case referring to the black puppet) was totally wrong, and offensive? What made it worse was that the actor that was operating the puppet happened to be black himself! My gosh! Couldn’t he have advised the props department that the puppet was inappropriate? Maybe work is hard to come by and it is ‘safer’ to grin and bare it than jeopardise one’s position in the play, or in future roles.

I love going to the theatre, the last play I attended was ‘To Kill a Mocking Bird’, wonderful acting and overall production.
I thought I could tolerate the slightly tedious start of Quality Street, but unfortunately, after seeing the appearance of that puppet, it had put me off!

As I have said, I love going to the theatre but this production could do with an overview. The theatre was very empty, which doesn’t surprise me. With such a beautiful venue, it is a pity that it had to allow such tripe to be displayed.

If you’re of a certain vintage you’ll love this! Three hundred songs and not only did I know all of them but, somehow, I knew the words as well!
Great band, great singers and, of course, Tony was great fun recalling his sixties experiences at Pirate radio and BBC Radio 1!
We all got up and danced for the encore and, boy!, did we enjoy ourselves!
The show is still on tour around the country so if they come your way do go and see them!

Blood Brothers….classy production with a great cast. Funny yet very moving.
It’s about time there was a revival of this timeless piece about two boys (to men) which is based around Liverpool.
It’s on tour, go and see it!

Saw Goldilocks yesterday but was very disappointed with the pantomime.
Not traditional enough as the production included a magic show (using live birds?!), circus acts and a trapeze wire. Not sure if they were trying to modernise the Goldilocks story, but it simply didn’t work!

I would have given five stars but for the only negative of the show, which I will mention later. Apart from that, the show was absolutely brilliant, as good as any West End Panto. Matt Baker was outstanding, a great dancer, trapeze artiste and unicycle rider! I didn’t realise he was so talented. Nigel Ellacott as Dame Betty Barnum was absolutely fantastic, a wonderful array of flashy clothes, so funny. And Phil Walker was outstanding, such a funny man. Brilliant jokes all the way through, couldn’t stop laughing. Could have done away with the usual Panto baddie Countess von Winklebottom, made some kids cry. Juggler Gordon Marquez was very very good. Completely unnecessary was magician Phil Hitchcock, throwing around a few handkerchiefs…. And producing real life doves. Left a nasty taste, real animals and birds should not be used as entertainment. Apart from this, Goldilocks was the best Panto I have ever seen.

Fantastic performance of the George Bernard Shaw play Mrs Warren’s Profession.

I accidentally booked the matinee but thought my tickets were for the evening performance. Realized this at 5pm and we’d missed the play. The ticket office were wonderful and changed the tickets for the evening so we didn’t miss out on this incredible play.

So kind and I’m so grateful for their help and understanding

Saw Mrs Warren's profession which had an excellent cast but unfortunately in the second to back row in the stalls not every voice on stage carries that far back and didnt enjoy some of the humour that everyone else appeared to which was rather frustrating. I would not choose those seats again. younger ladies behind me also struggling to hear everything. Raking angle means you are also dependent on not having large heads in front of you. Fortunately we could move along a couple of seats after the interval and at least try to lip read. Drinks at the bar - 10.50 for a medium glass of pinot noir?! Well at least I can console myself that I am trying to keep culture alive by subsidising it... Have had more enjoyable experiences at this theatre - further to the front next time.

I haven't written a review of the wonderful Richmond Theatre for nearly 10 years, and while I was on an (unexpectedly) solo trip there last Saturday afternoon to see the superb 'The Doctor' (many more thoughts on this later, do read!) I thought to myself that I must write an updated one, so here it is!

Richmond Theatre is one of my local theatres and I visit several times a year, to see all sorts of shows. Every experience there has been superb due to the friendly and efficient staff, quality of shows and the beautiful architecture.

So, here are some handy hints for you if you have not visited before!

Transport and parking:

It is just a few minutes' walk from Richmond train and tube station - you just walk down a little alley opposite the station, and it brings you out on lovely Richmond Green, which is a nice place to loiter if you are awaiting your companions! I usually drive, and although there is parking on Richmond Green, this is usually full, and many theatregoers choose to park around five minutes' walk away in the Old Deer Park car park, right off the A316, where I have never failed to find a space, as there are many. If there are none in the main section, don't miss the little connecting road to the extension bit, which is where I normally park. Would recommend having the RingGo app installed and ready as this is the easiest way to pay. Parking is free after a certain time in the evening - check the Richmond Council website for up-to-date details.

Arrival:

Popular shows may have short queues to enter so arrive early, but these are well-managed and fast-moving. Toilets, as ever in these old theatres, are few, so factor in waiting time for these too! There is also a lovely bar which opens out onto the Green with a small balcony that you can stand on, plus another bar by the Stalls. The staff throughout are unfailingly friendly, efficient and professional, and I salute them!

Seats:

I tend to go for the most expensive seats as they really are superb in terms of legroom and views. My favoured ones are in the centre, or as close as possible, with the best rows being, in my view, G and H in the Stalls, and of course a couple of rows forward or back from that are good too. These afford you a seat that's close enough to really see the actors' faces and feel part of it, but not so close that you feel uncomfortable with that or get a crick in your neck from looking upwards! The top price seats in the Dress Circle are also good, but I do prefer the Stalls. This is not to say I have never sat in the very cheapest seats on occasion - on one occasion at the very back of the Upper Circle when I chose a popular show at the last minute - and these, although obviously not the same as top price tickets, still give a good view and I thoroughly enjoyed what I saw. I've also sat in the next price down from the top and these are good, but in the Stalls I prefer to avoid the overhang from the Dress Circle by buying the premium ones - this is reflected in the price. Having visited so many times and sat in so many seats over the years, I believe the pricing structure accurately reflects the views.

Facilities:

By this I mean toilets! As mentioned before, for us ladies these are few and far between, as ever in these old theatres. Locate your nearest ones on arrival and head straight there at the intervals if needed! Top tip - there are very slightly more in the Dress Circle area than the Stalls, so can be worth running up there instead if you have Stalls seats! I can't remember if there are any in the Upper Circle but if there are, there are usually fewer people up there and so may be worth a visit!

Food and drink:

As mentioned before, there is a lovely bar with a balcony, and another inside. At the interval there is of course ice cream sold in the aisles, and the kiosks and probably bars sell bagged popcorn, crisps and so on.

Expectations and etiquette:

And now, some thoughts on etiquette and expectations, having had my most recent visit, to the matinee of 'The Doctor', on Saturday 24th September, rather marred by people near me complaining.

This was because the well-known actress who was meant to be playing the titular role was, sadly, unwell, so the understudy took on this role, as has been the case with any theatre production from the earliest days of Greek theatre to the present day! I booked, as everyone should, for the play itself rather than a particular cast member, and found out a few days before, as I follow theatre groups on social media, that she was unwell and not appearing, and that the consensus was that the understudy was superb. Therefore this deterred me not one jot and I approached the play with complete confidence and enthusiasm.

However, the same cannot be said of some audience members. While I was in the Stalls toilets around 15 minutes before the show, an announcement came over the tannoy that the well-known actress was not appearing, and amazingly this was met by a collective groan from the assembled toilet queue! Murmurs of 'I only came to see her' occurred! Emerging from my cubicle, I was fortunately able to inform them of the positive news that I had heard that the understudy was very good, for which I was thanked.

Things became worse in my lovely row G seat, as, being on my own, before the start I was able to listen to every negative word from a lady behind me, moaning to her companions about how she had pestered the theatre staff to provide a refund, or failing that, a voucher, as the actress she had booked to see was unable to perform. She seemed incapable of grasping that when you book to see a show or play, you book to see the show or play, not a specific person. The production was 'The Doctor', not 'The Well-Known Actress'. If you book to see a particular artist perform live at a concert, say Ed Sheeran, of course you are booking to see Ed Sheeran rather than a tribute act, so of course if they are ill you get a refund, but if you book a play, you book to see that play in the entirety of its talented cast, comprising not only the cast, but the writer, director, musicians, lighting people, sound people, composer, set designer, all of whom are essential to the production, and not one specific person. That's why it's live! People are human and can be unwell!

Thankfully the negativity of this lady did not affect my enjoyment after this, as once the play started and we experienced how amazingly talented the understudy was, I was able to suspend the reality of the ungrateful audience members behind me, who clearly do not attend plays and support theatre unless someone they have heard of is performing, and could thoroughly enjoy the play, which has the most amazing actors in all the other roles, all integral to the thought-provoking plot. It is certainly a play for our time. The understudy, Celia, was completely superb and received a standing ovation at the end, and had I not known of the 'well-known actress' who was cast in the titular role I would have assumed that Celia was always meant to be 'The Doctor'.

As my teen, who I was booked to go with, was unable to attend due to illness, I have booked to see this play again as it is now in the West End - I can confirm that, with or without the 'well-known actress', it will be amazing. I extend my admiration to the cast of the play, and the staff of Richmond theatre, and I am thoroughly looking forward to my next visit.

Unlike some of my fellow audience members, I also hope that the well-known actress has recovered well, which was a sentiment I did not hear expressed amidst the clamour for refunds among her 'fans'. Strange that.....

My friend and I booked a play "The Doctor"to see Juliet Stevenson perform as we knew she was the 'star' of the play.. We were not locals and had to travel quite a distance, it took me 1 hour to get there and my friend 2 hours. Having booked directly with ATG I received numerous emails from them beforehand and also my e-tickets. On arriving at the theatre we joined the queue and at the entrance we noticed a tiny piece of paper saying that Juliet Stevenson was 'not performing" and that an understudy would be taking the main part. I did not want to see a play that I knew little about without the well known actress, who was used in all the marketing to sell the seats, so I asked for a refund. This was refused, so I asked for a voucher, this was refused. So I asked to speak to the Manager and she told me repeatedly that they could not do this. Why can't a company give a voucher? Why didn't they sent an email to say that Juliet Stevenson was not performing? I asked for a telephone number to follow up on this and I was given the stage door number, I left 2 messages no one has called me back. I asked for an email and me and my friend sent emails to Steve Jones. No one has replied.
Bad service, Bad communication and I will think twice before booking any theatre with a company that has 58 venues including 10 West End Theatres but simply cannot look after the very people who keep their theatres "Open"
