The A Rosa river cruise company has its embarkation hub here so on our trip we had a quick look. It’s a small town but quite charming. Sadly the weather was a bit rainy when we went.

Die beeindruckende Klosterkirche gibt den Bauzustand des 18. Jahrhunderts im Stil des Rokoko wieder und wirkt wie frisch renoviert. Schöne Gemälde und einige "heilige Leiber", das sind mit Brokatstoff bekleidete Skelette in Glassärgen. Auch die Orgel ist ein Glanzstück.

Das Stift Engelszell gehört zu den besonderen Highlights an der Donau zwischen Passau und Linz!
Der kleine Shop ist durchaus interessant. Neben üblichen Andenken kann man hier auch die bekannten Stiftsliköre und Biere erwerben.

Bellissima chiesa molto decorata con stucchi, ori ed affreschi vari.

L'abbazia di Engleszell è un'abbazia cistercense trappista situata nei pressi di Enfelhartszell e circondata dalla natura. È possibile visitare gratuitamente l'abbazia ammirando le opere di Johann Georg Üblher, Joseph Deutschmann e Bartolomeo Altomonte. Per i gruppi è possibile prenotare diverse visite guidate con la possibilità di assaggiare i liquori prodotti dai monaci. Per chi fosse interessato ad assaggiare le birre trappiste da loro prodotte è possibile acquistarle allo shop adiacente la chiesa, oppure in un piccolo bar lì vicino.
È sicuramente una tappa che consiglio a tutti gli amanti della birra e a chi è appassionato d'arte.

Very small town but with a magnificent monastery. The Baroque Rococo church is well worth a visit both for its architecure as well as the unusual quirky side chapels.

besonders der Klosterladen ist zu empfehlen wegen dem leckeren Bier und Spirituosen. Auch der Klostergarten ist sehenswert. In der Klostergärtnerei kann man viele Gemüsepflanzen kaufen.

We stopped at Engelhartszell during our Danube river cruise. Our guide took us around this beautiful small quaint town. Our first stop was this beautiful Abbey. They had a huge garden where they grow some organic fruits. It also had a small aquarium.
The church itself was very beautiful. it had a lot of nice paintings and murals. It is managed by 4 monks of Trappist Monastery. They had a small gift shop where they sell their own beer and other things to cover the expenses. The small town was also worth seeing.

On our river cruise, we went first to visit private homes in small groups, which was a delightful experience. We then travelled to the abbey and viewed the gardens and small aquarium. We went inside the church and learned the history. At this time there are 4 remaining monks and one in training.
They brew beer and make scrapped. There’s a small gift shop and its proceeds support the abbey. Glad we saw it

We were advised by our cruise director to bike up to the Abbey (which could easily have been walked as well). After 3 weeks in Europe I was almost getting sick of seeing 'yet another beautiful church' but I'm so glad I did as it was like no other we had been too. Firstly it's the only Trappist monastery in Austria where a monk in traditional robes will serve you a Weisbier and then the Abbey itself is amazing. The wall murals are painted on traditional neo-classical style but it looks as if Picasso has been let loose on the ceilings as they are done in pastel cubist styling. Really beautiful. And then there are the gold ornate, glass fronted caskets with what look like skeletal remains of nobility adorned in silks, satin and jewels. Strangely confronting but amazing to see.
