This is such a pleasure and a wonderful peaceful canal boat trip, the service is fabulously friendly, informative and fun, this was my 3rd trip and I'll be going again in the summer

We had family visiting from 'down south' and we all had a really enjoyable trip on the canal. Despite the day being somewhat dull, it didn't affect the enjoyment and felt the trip was well worth the price paid. The staff all work so hard to make the passengers feel welcome and are approachable to answer questions.
Our only disappointment was with regard to parking. It was suggested by Birdswood; we pay for 4 hours parking, which we were unable to do at the Car Park adjacent to the canal (£3.50 for 3 hours or £7 All Day). When we disembarked from the barge and arrived back at the car, we were already over our '3 hours' so in order to have a hot drink and a bite to eat we had to move the car, though we didn't really need another 3 hours parking. We then noticed the car park opposite indeed had 4 hours parking. We think for visitors to get the best out of their visit to Cromford there should be perhaps parking concessions if they have booked a Birdswood trip or at least the parking fees should all be the same. We envisage people perhaps leaving the barge and going straight to their cars without spending money in the area and consequently not supporting the local businesses.

Another fantastic day out on the canal boat. We went to celebrate my Dad's 85th birthday. A great time, wonderful volunteers on board just add to the great experience. Great value for money and would highly recommend to all.

I went on the boat trip yesterday with my close friend .Though the weather wasn't sunny, it was fine and dry .I was immediately impressed by the enthusiasm of the polite team who manage these trips .We took our seats and began the journey.The pace ,although sedate was very calming .During the trip there was commentary outlining history and any key features along the way.Tea,coffee and snacks were available to purchase and brought to your table .Overall a thoroughly enjoyable trip which we would probably repeat next year when there are sunny days

Fantastic 2 hour trip. Very relaxing very friendly informative staf. Made my partner and our two dogs very welcome.

Just a relaxing thing to do staff very helpful and a very informative commentary about the history of the boat and canal would definitely recommend it if your going to Cromford

We were lucky enough to be on holiday in the Peak District on the day there was a trip available on Birdswood. What a lovely way to spend an afternoon, even the wet weather couldn't dampen our spirits. Enthusiastic and knowledgeable volunteers, thank you so much for a great couple of hours.

No, at least not for the horse drawn trip. It’s a very narrow narrowboat with steep steps to get into the boat.

Hi, please could you help? My family booked via Groupon x2 adults & x4(family ticket) I.e. x6 people in total for Birdswood last Thurs (31/05/18) but a mix-up with the Groupon booking system meant the booking did not come through. We were advised by Birdswood to claim refund through Groupon but they say we need an email from yourselves. We were very disappointed to miss out on such a lovely trip with such great reviews as were travelling back from Peak District the next day. Please could you help in order that we may receive our refund? Many thanks Helen

Hi Helen, I don't deal with Birdswood bookings myself but have forwarded your query to Birdswood's operations manager. You can contact her directly if you choose - simply look up Birdswood on Facebook, 'like' the page and then use the Message facility.

Hi, you can pre-book for a trip at 11am or 2pm this coming Sunday 27/05/18. It's best done online - just search " bookings - Birdswood "

Hi, thanks for your enquiry. The boat gets busiest at weekends so we'd recommend pre-booking either online via our website (TA won't allow me to post URL links - just search Birdswood's name...), by email (address on website) or via our limited availability Groupon deals (search: canal, Derby)
Trips depart at 11am and 2pm prompt on Wed, Thur, Sat & Sun - it's best to be at the boat 15 mins prior. They last two hours, with about 25 minutes at the turn-around point at Leawood Pump House when passengers can get off and look at the various industrial archaeological sites including the Wigwell Aqueduct, the 1840s Pump House and the 1830s railway workshops at High Peak Junction.

Light refreshments are available on board - pre-pack food items and hot and cold drinks - but we have no problem with people bringing their own food to consume on board.
