Beautiful and ancient church with beautiful paintings, some aisles with colors are so reminiscent of Assisi, we listened to the very beautiful and engaging religious service.

The simple external forms, in the Umbrian-Tuscan Gothic style, respond to the interiors rich in important works of art, often overshadowed by the cycle of frescoes by Piero della Francesca, an extraordinary testimony of Italian Renaissance painting. The single nave, flanked by fourteenth-century and Renaissance chapels and shrines, leads to the Bacci chapel, behind the main altar, where you can admire the scenes of the Legend of the True Cross, which Piero della Francesca made inspired by the Golden Legend of Jacopo da Varagine. The ticket office and entrance are located on the left side of the church, excessive the cost of the full ticket which is 9 euros. But we were lucky because that day, exceptionally, included a guided tour at fixed times. Very good boy who explained in detail the masterpieces of the church, in particular the frescoes by Piero della Francesca.

In this large church in Romanesque architectural style, dated 1322 - 1374, you can admire the cycle of frescoes by Piero della Francesca that are in the Bacci Chapel, a central chapel behind the high altar.
The frescoes tell the story of the True Cross - the wood used to build the cross of the Passion of Christ - and is a legend dated 1260 - 1270 by the Dominican friar Jacopo da Varagine and the main source of these tales are the Apocryphal Gospels. Piero della Francesca was able, with sublime mastery, to paint the 10 episodes of the legend that give us so many details of the time, stylistic, landscape, cultural details, as well as uses and customs of the characters we see painted.
This pictorial cycle is articulated on three levels at the center and laterally the whole chapel but is not distributed in chronological order, rather an order that the artist considered most effective but that safeguards, in any case, the theological correspondences that characterize the different scenes. The paintings are wonderful! And this large basilica and its interior light give a perfect show despite the feeling that more than a true place of recollection to prayer, the church has over time become a museum center, thanks to the presence of the glass box that welcomes operators for ticket control. I recommend, after visiting the Bacci Chapel, to look around, stop, discover other works. I booked online with a precise time that is respected, you can also buy the ticket on site keeping in mind that it is not obvious to enter immediately but respect the agreed visiting time. The staff is friendly. You can also rent the audio guide for the price of 4 euros, I did it so as not to miss any description of the episodes of the True Cross and I am satisfied.

The Church of San Francesco was the point of greatest interest that struck me during my visit to Arezzo. The exterior I agree with many who consider it simple and rather modest. The interior, in addition to having the real cross by Piero della Francesca, has some valuable works. Limited and paid entry.

Visit April 2023 - One of the places not to be missed on a visit to Arezzo is certainly the Basilica of San Francesco which, don't be fooled by the outside, has splendid works inside, first of all the Bacci Chapel with the splendid frescoes relating to the Legend of the True Cross by Piero della Francesca.
But let's go in order: the construction, by the Franciscan friars dates back to the 14th century except for the bell tower which was built later, the external façade is sober almost austere, the interior has a single nave rich in chapels and frescoes, but the one that attracting the majority of visitors is certainly the Bacci Chapel with the Legend of the True Cross which tells the story of the wood used to build the Cross on which Jesus was crucified with a pictorial cycle which has the Apocryphal Gospels as its primary source, the cycle is structured in three levels on the central and side walls of the chapel and does not follow a chronological order. In front of these wonderful frescoes we find, suspended over the altar, the Great Crucifix by the Master of San Francesco, a pupil of Cimabue, between the Chapel and the Cross, these alone are enough to amaze visitors.
There are also other noteworthy chapels, including the Tarlati Chapel with an Annunciation on a panel by Neri di Bicci, the Guasconi Chapel with San Michele Arcangelo by Spinello Aretino and the Chapel of the Fallen of the First World War. In addition to those mentioned there are other works, to be able to admire everything I recommend making the visit slowly, possibly at one of the first entrances, paid entry, possible cumulative ticket for the Arezzo museum circuit.
Absolutely not to be missed.

The building is simple and bare, people come here for the exceptional frescoes of the discovery of the cross. They are sublime and strangely modern.

Exceptional with beautifully executed stained glass windows in a context rich in artistic content. Look carefully at the ceiling.

The frescoes are beautiful and very well kept.
However, the €9 ticket price appears excessive. Especially considering the very short duration of their visit.

For our holiday in Arezzo 2024 the first place we wanted to visit was the Church of San Francesco. The first and usual piece of advice I would like to give is to book online in advance and if you have enough time it might be better to book those cumulative tickets that give you access to other places or museums to visit in the city. Confirming the goodness of the online booking practice is the fact that the day we visited the church it was already sold out. Moving on to the visit, if you show up a little early you can freely take some photos of the place as is also recommended by the staff on duty before following the staff who guides you to the entrance of the stupendous Bacci Chapel where you will find one of the greatest masterpieces of the Italian art or "the Legend of the True Cross by Piero della Francesca". A pictorial cycle that deals with the history of the Cross on which Jesus Christ was crucified. Personally, if you can, I would recommend a pair of fixed lenses, perhaps a 35mm or a 50mm and a 100mm to focus on the details. If possible, all optics must be very bright. The visit ends with admiring all the other paintings present in the rest of the Basilica and do not fail to photograph the various multicolored windows present on the site and obviously the large painted cross placed above the main altar. A visit that is worth it if you pass through Arezzo.

Visit to the Stories of the True Cross face to face with Piero della Francesca thanks to the scaffolding for the restoration. Truly exciting, good driving.

How can I buy a reserved ticket to the Basilica of San Francesco Arezzo? Although I would be paying by PayPal, the website requests my social security number. I am not going to provide it over the Internet to avoid identity theft.
Is there any way to purchase a ticket in advance without providing the number?
