The ancient cathedral of Chioggia, dating back to the High Middle Ages, was completely destroyed by fire at the beginning of the seventeenth century. It was therefore necessary to build a new one, which was built on the same site within a few years, designed by the architect Baldassarre Longhena. The new church, dedicated to the Assumption, was oriented in an opposite way to the previous one, that is, with the facade on the main road axis of Chioggia (today’s Corso del Popolo).
The sober salient façade, without plaster and with exposed bricks, is just enlivened by the elegant marble frame of the entrance door, topped by a fifteenth-century image of the Lion of St. Mark, and by two niches in a side position, with statues of Saints Happy and Lucky (patrons of the town). The Romanesque style bell tower stands on the right of the church, in a very backward position and detached from it; the structure, dating back to the fourteenth century, is about 55 meters high and stands out for its beautiful octagonal dome. A valuable early medieval bas-relief, placed above the entrance door, depicts the Virgin and Child together with two other characters. The cell, ventilated by a graceful three-light window on each of the four sides, contains six bells the largest of which weighs about 13 tons.
The interior, a Latin cross with a marked transept, is divided into three naves with barrel vaults. Along the aisles there are six altars decorated with paintings and works by Venetian artists of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, including a valuable altarpiece by Palma il Giovane (pupil of the great Tiziano Vecellio). The high altar, installed in the presbytery, is a remarkable baroque work by the architect Alessandro Tremignon, the same who designed the monumental entrance to the Arsenale of Venice. The wooden choir that occupies the space around the altar dates back to the sixteenth century. To the immediate left of the presbyter there is the Chapel dedicated to the Patron Saints of Chioggia, where their relics are kept. The aluminum statues of the two characters are of recent times; they are carried in procession through the streets of the town on the occasion of the patron saint’s day (11 June). According to tradition, San Felice and San Fortunato were martyred in Aquileia, at the time of Emperor Diocletian.
Also worth seeing is the sumptuous marble pulpit leaning against a pillar of the nave, the work of two local sculptors in the seventeenth century. In the lower part there are statues of two powerful telamons, intent on supporting the structure; in the upper part there are a series of bas-reliefs depicting stories of Jesus Christ. Higher still, a refined gilded copper canopy crowns the entire monument. Along the nave there is also a suggestive draped plaque, dedicated to the Nature Guide and poet Giuseppe Olivi (distinguished Chioggiotto, friend of Foscolo). The Latin forbito inscription was composed by the writer Melchiorre Cesarotti.
On the left of the cathedral, along the Canale del Perottolo, stands the pretty and green garden of the churchyard (the small churchyard) surrounded by a beautiful eighteenth-century balustrade enriched by a series of marble statues, among which stands out that of the Virgin and Child; it is said that in front of this stood the condemned to capital punishment, just before their execution. There is also an acephalous female statue, from whose enigmatic figure some curious folk legends have sprung. The site is also ennobled by the presence of some interesting Roman finds. Originally here was the cemetery of the cathedral, which was finally closed in the Napoleonic era following the prohibition of burying the dead within the urban circle.

Work on the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, built on the foundations of an ancient Temple, began in 1624. On the external facade we find the statues of the Holy Martyrs Felice and Fortunato, Patron Saints of the city. Inside we have the Baptistery at the bottom on the left and three altars, that of San Giovanni Battista, that of Santa Maria Assunta and that of San Michele Arcangelo and Santi Gerolamo and Agostino. All very beautiful, of great impact.

The Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta is the main place of worship in Chioggia, the mother church of the diocese of the same name.
