Gateway to the city if you were on the road from Napoli

Porta Napoli is the doorway in the Arco di Trionfo di Lecce. It is located near Piazzetta Arco di Trionfo. It is named Napoli because it stands at the end of the road that leads to Naples.

The walls were removed in the nineteenth century, but the arch was kept.

It was built in 1548 in honor of Charles V who had built the fortifications necessary for the defense of the city. It stands on the site of the ancient Porta San Giusto.

Bellissima porta d’ingresso della città, si apre sul centro storico. La porta, edificata nel 1548 in onore di Carlo V che aveva fatto realizzare le opere di fortificazione in difesa della città, sorge nel sito dell'antica Porta San Giusto. Fu voluta dalla cittadinanza e da Ferrante Loffredo, preside della provincia di Terra d'Otranto, per celebrare in maniera emblematica il potere e l'Impero di Carlo V d'Asburgo. Fu così chiamata perché era la strada porta da cui si intraprendeva la via consolare per Napoli. Si presto bene a foto. Da vedere!

FREE! Must to go in Lecce

Very well take care you won't spend a lot of time seeing the monument, but it is a must to see in Lecce. It light up at night making it even more special

A beautiful entrance into a beautiful city

This beautiful and gracious gate makes a proud entrance into the city of Lecce. All of Lecce is done in the Baroque style, and this gate is a wonderful introduction to the city.

An impressive entrance to an impressive City!

Lecce’s imposing Porta Napoli was completed in 1548 after a comission by Habsburg Emperor Charles V to fortify the city. Modeled after triumphal arches from ancient Rome, its design is different from Lecce’s ornate baroque style. The marble gate is 1 of the city’s architectural treasures. 1 of 3 historic entrances built into the Lecce’s ancient city walls. Lecce honored the Emperor's family by placing their family emblem on the arch. Today the Arch is a stop for the many tourists who visit Lecce. The gate leads to the streets that take you to the center of the city.

Nice gate

The gates dates from a few centuries ago, not that old but a nice entrance or meeting point to enter the historical center. When you pass the gate there is a little coffee bar.
