Having visited beaches throughout NZ this is by far our most favourite. It is on a huge bay, white sand, clear water and deserted. We loved swimming here.
It is tranquil spot due in part to the narrow twisty steep road over the mountain to get to it. The road had washed away in places after the bad weather in February but is well worth the nerve racking journey as it is glorious location.
There are a few small parking areas next to the beach to park your car.

Otama Beach was one of our favourite NZ beaches. Lots of Pohutukawa trees along the edge of the beach which gives you some welcome shade in the very hot sun. Very picturesque beach.

White sand beach of the Coromandel. Totally unexpected - wee surprise . I walked the beach and swam in the sea. Dog friendly as well.
Hint: sunscreen, sunhat, suitable footwear. Take your time and enjoy it.

Otama Beach is a very scenic area. Especially on the trip over to it.
We have been hear several times to go Kontiki fishing. Always successful here!

This beach is everything you imagine a remote coromandel beach to look like. Breathtaking as you spy the beach for the first time. Pohutukawa trees line the edge providing the sought after shade in the height of summer, white sand and clear sparkling water. There is even a swing in the trees. Dogs are permitted all day at the southern end of the beach. One of the few besches that allow this. Swimming is good, although it has a steeper slope than Opito.
Easy access down steps. A beach worth spending the day at with the whole family.

Schöner weicher und weißer Sand. Wir waren fast alleine in der Bucht, der Weg dorthin rentiert sich. Danach dann zu Lukes Kitchen

This beach is very accessible from the car park. There are easy to catch waves in low tide when the wind is auspicious. Also interesting rocks to explore to the northern end of the beach. We also walked here from Opito Bay, which was quite an adventure with careful navigation around private property. Highly recommended.

After lunch at Luke’s Kitchen, Kuaotunu, we decided to drive over the hill and visit Otama and Opito beaches.
Fabulous sandy beach with great scenery and views of Mercury Island and surrounding islands.
Good parking along several places.
I’m sure it will be popular in the summer for swimming but July and on a nice sunny afternoon a walk is just the ticket.
Not far from Whitianga, road is narrow and gravel in places but if you drive to the conditions it’s perfectly safe.
