Pistoia compensates for the lack of a stylistically homogeneous historic center with the presence of many important monuments, especially churches, although isolated from each other, and especially with the central square, one of the most beautiful and interesting in Italy although not among the most famous.
The space, not very vast but of great charm, has always been the heart of the city - it was the forum in Roman times - and houses its greatest monuments, seats of civil and religious power: the Duomo with its elegant facade and powerful bell tower, the Baptistery with its characteristic two-tone, the severe Town Hall. The overall view, not easy to capture in photography for the size of the buildings and the relative smallness of the spaces, is certainly among the most significant experiences you can have in the Tuscan city.

Truly Pistoia is a Wonder of Art.
Beautiful city, spectacular alleys and beauties everywhere.
Excellent hospitality, beautiful people the Pistoiai.
You eat divinely and then, eyes rested and fascinated by the beauties of Pistoia Art and full belly by the magnificence of Tuscan cuisine, with His Majesty the Florentine expertly prepared and exceptional wines, make your stay very pleasant.
I didn't know it was Puccini's birthplace, so Arte Arte and always Arte.

The Piazza del Duomo is in the historic center and is the real heart of Pistoia.
On this square overlook important buildings such as the Cathedral of San Zeno, the Bishops' Palace, the Baptistery and the Town Hall.

We went to Pistoia on July 12th 2024. We arrived at dinner time and parked in a street in center town. We paid regularly for the parking slot. There was a concert in Duomo square we didn't know and it wasn't accessible at all, so we wasted time and money. But the bad news came yesterday when we received a fine from Pistoia Police. As we couldn't go through the path given by Google maps as it was all closed for the concert, we went through a street with limitations that we didn't see and we didn't know. So, an advice to tourists: if you really want to go to Pistoia, go by train or bus. Don't go by your car as it's impossibile to understand local rules and you risk to pay a while later for some unknown traffic violation.

Piazza del Duomo is scenic and spectacular although less known than other famous Tuscan squares. On the square overlooks the beautiful thirteenth-century town hall and the bell tower of the cathedral. The facade of the cathedral is on an open space bordering the square, just in front of the baptistery. Avoid Point of Sale mornings, when the square is crowded with stalls that do not allow an overview of the square. To enjoy the square you have to see it empty; the best time is the afternoon of Point of Sale days, when it is completely cleaned and there is almost no one around.

Beautiful square with ancient buildings that recall the history of the city of Pistoia, small but with a well-kept pedestrian center with shops and many restaurants with average prices and never excessive.

The Piazza del Duomo of Pistoia is a historical and artistic place, away from city traffic and is dotted with the most important monuments representing the political and religious power of the city. We can thus observe the Baptistery of San Giovanni, the cathedral of San Zeno which houses the silver altar of San Jacopo admirable work of goldsmithery, the bell tower 67 meters high from the top of which you can enjoy a wide view of the square and the city, the ancient palace of the bishops, once the residence of the bishop of Pistoia, the Palazzo Pretorio, now a courthouse, and the thirteenth-century town hall which houses the civic museum of ancient art. A place of trade since medieval times, it is still home to a vast market. The square also overlooks the medieval tower of Catilina where, according to legend, the body of the Roman conspirator was buried. We also visited the square during the evening hours , when the lighting of the buildings gives it a special charm by highlighting the two-tone green and white of some buildings . Pistoia , Capital of Culture 2017, is a small town little known to mass tourism but worthy , in our opinion , of a thorough visit in order to be able to appreciate in more depth the many buildings and interesting works of art that it preserves .
